Kamala Harris Raises High Hopes – For The First Time In A long Time – Across the Border

“Finally, we have a chance of getting rid of Trump once and for all,” one Buffalo, N.Y. resident told this visitor from the Canadian side.

What a big difference a week can make.

How do you say hope in America and in Canada and other parts of the world these days? In  two words – KAMALA HARRIS.

My wife Mary and I are frequent travellers to the Buffalo, N.Y. and we have a number of American friends further off that we communicate with by phone who have been feeling pretty depressed and concerned over the past year or so.

They have been worried sick that Donald Trump might become President again and take a match and can or gasoline to what has made their country, with all its faults, a beacon for democracy and freedom over the past almost 250 years.

Then last week, U.S. President Joe Biden, realizing that what comes with advanced age was dragging him and his future in politics down, decided to put country first and not run for another term of office. At the same time, he endorsed him Vice-President, Kamala Harris, and since they support for her has been pouring in from all over the country.

At garden walk tour my wife and I attended this past weekend, you could tell right away that spirits were high.

For the first time in a very long time, there is hope across the border. You can feel it.

‘Hallelujah! We’re sure she (Kamal Harris) can beat him,’ so many people, in so many words, said every time the conversation turned to the topic of politics.

My response was, she better because it is not only the United States that will suffer if Trump gets back in, but Canada and the rest of the world.

Then I said; ‘Make sure you all get out and vote and tell all your friends and neighbours to do the same.’

With that, I will say to you what I have said before in past commentaries on this NAL platform. Please encourage each and every American friend you have to get engaged in the upcoming election to soundly defeat Donald Trump.

One response to “Kamala Harris Raises High Hopes – For The First Time In A long Time – Across the Border

  1. I wish I could share your optimism, Doug, I really do. But the problem isn’t Trump or even the Republicans — the problem is America. Harris is going to attract some good people to vote for her, many who might not have voted at all had Biden remained in the race: young Americans, racialized Americans, despairing progressives. But when all’s said and done, it’ll be the same old neoliberal capitalist greed-machine, kow-towing to corporations, giving little more than a nod to climate chaos, and turning a blind eye to genocidal Israel. A change in style rather than substance, like the election of Barak Obama. Cheer up, though: I’ve been wrong before.
