To Alberta’s Premier – Please Spare Us Your Tears Over Jasper Wildfire

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted July 26th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Buildings in and around Jasper, Alberta go up in flames while fire also rages through Jasper National Park, a home to a diversity of wildlife.

I like most, if not all my fellow Canadians, are heartbroken over  the  suffering and destruction a monster wildfire is causing to people, to property and to wildlife in the Jasper, Alberta area.

The terrible  level of that suffering and destruction is certainly enough to bring Canadians from coast to coast to tears, and to support whatever they can do to see that the victims of this latest of many climate-related disasters.

But watching and hearing the tears and words of sorrow from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at a news briefing this past July 25th is hard to take.

If Smith has been listening at all to eminent scientists and climatologists in Canada and around the world, she should know that these experts have been warning for decades now that man-made climate change is real and that is symptoms, including more frequent episodes of extreme heat, drought and lightning storms would result in more frequents wildfires live the one ravaging the community of Jasper and the world-renown wildlife part around it.

Yet Smith has chosen to defy and attack efforts by Canada’s federal government to address the causes of the climate crisis we all find ourselves experiencing now.

With a trademark arrogant smirk on her face, Smith has continually to align herself with the interests of powerful lobbyists for corporations in the gas and oil field.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and former Fox News host and notorious climate denier Tucker Carlson came off like birds of a feather during a meeting in her province last year.

Last year, she imposed a moratorium on approving any more green energy projects and she welcomed to her province the likes of Tucker Carlson, a former Fox Cable Network host, a close friend and ally of Donald Trump and a notorious climate denier. During their encounter, Smith invited Carlson to aim some of the venom he is famous for on Canada’s Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeaut.

Indeed, it is individuals in positions of power like Danielle Smith that are making it even harder for individuals, communities and governments to work together to address the root causes of climate change and its symptoms. As if the challenges we face to address this problem aren’t daunting enough.

What we should all be crying over is the continued terrible impacts ever more frequent and severe climate-related episodes like droughts, wind and rainstorms, flooding and wildfires are having on people, property and other life on this planet.

We could also cry some tears over the countless billions of dollars in higher insurance premiums and rebuilding destroyed property that the severity of these climate-related episodes are causing.

As for the crocodile tears displayed by the likes of Danielle Smith this past July 25th, please Madame Premier, spare us.

I totally agree with your commentary and have felt the same for a long time. Drill baby drill. Burn baby burn. The problem is it is not just Alberta who suffers.
