An Invite to All from Niagara’s Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society (PALS)

Niagara, Ontario – On Thursday April 25th at 7 p.m. The Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society will be holding a zoom meeting celebrating our 48th year of work to protect the unique and threatened Niagara Tender Fruit and Grape Lands and other prime farmlands in Ontario.
The hosting panelists for the zoom meeting are three speakers from farm related groups that have a broad range of experience in farmland preservation in order to highlight the current threats to these vital food resources and point a positive way forward .
As Martin Straathlof, Executive Diredtor of the Ontario Farmland Trust notes; “ There are increasing rates of farmland loss and rising land prices that are threatening the future viability of our agri-food system and there is a critical need for a united effort among land trusts, land owners and municipalities to protect vital agricultural lands.”
Panelist Max Hansgen, President of the National Farmers Union-Ontario warns us; “ We need to protect prime farmland tor growing foo and provide examples of recent activities to encourage municipalities to stop sprawl and not expand their urban boundaries.”
And specifically in Niagara, the former Nantional Farmers Union-Ontario President sent a letter in 2022 asking the Regional Staff “ to oppose any urban boundary expansion that would result in the loss of prime farmland and to reimagine population growth through responsible densification, rather than boundary expansion.”
