You Are Invited to Celebrate Earth Day in St. Catharines, Niagara

St. Catharines/Niagara – Celebrate conservation and environmental sustainability with the City of St. Catharines by joining in Earth Day-related activities.

Earth Day at Market Square

The City of St. Catharines has partnered with Links for Greener Learning to hold its annual Earth Day event on Friday, April 19, 2024, at Market Square from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Elementary school students will participate in the hands-on activities and demonstrations. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastic.

On Saturday, April 20 at the St. Catharines Farmers Market, there will be draws for a free vegetable starter plant, plus a reusable Market bag. Draws will happen on the hour from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Neighbourhood and Park clean-ups

Groups and individuals will be making St. Catharines a more beautiful place by helping to clean up neighbourhoods and parks on Saturday, April 20. The City made some supplies available and has made arrangements to pick up the garbage bags. Residents can still join clean-ups at the Dunlop Drive Older Adult Centre (80 Dunlop Dr.) and Clifford’s Creek Park (24 Phelps St.) on April 20, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

A reminder to stay on City property, and make sure to avoid private property, railway tracks, and Ministry of Transportation (MTO) land adjacent to the highway or on/off ramps. If sharps are found, volunteers should avoid handling them and contact Citizens First at citizensfirst@stcatharines.ca or 905.688.5600 to have them properly removed and disposed of.

Malcolmson Eco-Park clean-up and planting

Join the Friends of Malcolmson Eco-Park for an Earth Day event at the park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. Community members can participate in a park clean-up, plant native trees and wildflowers, plus join guided bird-watching tours in the park. There will also be a scavenger hunt for kids and families. Those who plan on helping with planting projects are invited to bring to bring shovels, gloves, trowels, etc. Visit the Friends of Malcolmson Eco-Park for more information. 

Malcolmson Eco-Park is located at 325 Lakeshore Rd. Parking is available at the nearby Grantham Lions Club (732 Niagara St.).

Tree Giveaway

There is a new location for the tree giveaway this year. It will be held at Lancaster Park on Saturday, May 4. Residents will need to pre-order a tree first, then pick it up on May 4. Registration will open to residents of St. Catharines at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17. You can register at stcatharines.ca/TreeGiveawayLancaster Park is located at 31 Wood St.
