An Invitation from the City to All Residents of St. Catharines

St. Catharines, Niagara – Residents of St. Catharines are being encouraged to get outdoors and explore nature. The City will once again be participating in the City Nature Challenge, scheduled for April 26 through to April 29.

The international event is held annually and aims to motivate residents to learn about the wildlife and ecosystem in their own cities.

Participants are asked to take pictures of plants and animals within the city limits of St. Catharines and upload them to the City’s event page on iNaturalist. Community members can then help identify the organisms and species that are photographed.

Participating cities are then ranked based on their number of observations, species identified, and people involved. Those observations need to be uploaded by May 5.

“With spring weather finally here, the City Nature Challenge provides the perfect opportunity to spend time outdoors,” said Community Initiatives Specialist Kaylea Cassano. “Last year in St. Catharines, those who participated in the challenge identified over 120 different species.”

The City Nature Challenge got its start in 2016 as a competition between the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences. Since then, it has grown into an international event that continues to motivate cities around the globe to document wildlife. Over 1.8 million observations were made in 2023. Participants also identified over 57,000 species.

Challenge results will be announced on May 6, 2024. Find more information at stcatharines.ca/citynaturechallenge.
