‘Please contact Jagmeet Singh and ask him to use his political leverage to persuade Prime Minister Trudeau to prohibit the building of NEW gas plants in Ontario effective immediately.’
A Call-Out from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance, a citizen-based organization advocating for a future of renewable energy

In March 2022, Prime Minister Trudeau promised to achieve significant greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution reductions by 2030 in return for NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh promising to keep him in office until June 2025.
However, Doug Ford’s plans to build NEW gas plants and ramp up the GHG pollution from Ontario’s gas plants by more than 700% by 2043 is a clear and unequivocal threat to Trudeau’s commitment to reduce our GHG pollution and meet our Paris Agreement climate targets.
According to the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Dunsky Report, we don’t need to build NEW gas plants to keep our lights on during our hottest summer days and coldest winter nights.
The good news is that we have much cleaner and lower cost options to meet our electricity needs.
1. Negotiate a multi-year contract with Hydro Quebec to import Quebec waterpower during our hottest summer days. Since Quebec has a winter peaking electricity grid, it has a huge surplus of clean waterpower available for export to Ontario during the summer.
2. Pay customers to shift some of their electricity demands from peak to off-peak periods. The cost of shifting electricity consumption to off-peak periods is 98% lower than the cost of building new gas plants.
3. Pay residential and small commercial customers to supply power to the grid, during peak demand periods, from their solar rooftops and their EVs’ batteries. Doug Ford’s plan to only purchase peak power from large corporations leaves a huge energy potential untapped, and robs smaller businesses and homeowners of a chance to benefit from going green.
Elizabeth May (Leader, Green Party of Canada) and Mike Schreiner (Leader of the Green Party of Ontario) have called on Prime Minister Trudeau to establish federal Clean Electricity Regulations that will prohibit the building of NEW gas plants in Ontario and move our province to a net zero-carbon electricity grid by 2030.
