Niagara MPP, Welland Mayor Blast Niagara Health System for Closing Beds, Services at Welland Hospital

“Make no mistake, your proposed changes, if implemented will almost certainly result in the avoidable deaths of people in our community. It is abhorrent to think that such drastic changes could go forward at all, much less without community consultation or clear communication and discussion with locally elected officials.”

A Brief Foreword to this Open Letter from Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper –

Niagara At Large is continuing to work its way through some serious technical difficulties as a result of what may have been a case of hacking of our online news site.

Nevertheless, I feel I need to try now to get this very strong and urgent Open Letter from two of Niagara, Ontario elected leaders on as soon as possible given what is at stake around the health care of Niagara residents, especially in our region’s southern tier.

I also wish to say this. And I say it in all due respect to the many dedicated nurses, doctors and other health care staff who work in the system.

Welland Mayor Frank Campion

Niagara Health, more infamously known in the beginning years of its existence – some two decades ago – as the Niagara Health System or NHS for short, has conducted its activities with a disturbing degree of arrogance and disregard for the interests and concerns of everyday Niagara residents.

The first CEO and board of this amalgamated hospital system, created under the former Conservative government of then-premier Mike Harris, and continued under the former provincial Liberal governments of Dalton MgGuinty and Kathleen Wynne, stubbornly rammed a plan down our throats to build a super hospital for the region on a former farm field in west St. Catharines,

When countless many Niagara residents urged the NHS to build this large mega hospital in a more central location in the region so everyone would have easier access to it, the honchoes at the hospital system respondedback that this was not going to be a “super hospital,” but rather one to replace the later to be demolished St. Catharines General and Hotel Dieu hospitals in St. Catharines. These same honchoes tried to dampen public concerns with vows that there hospitals in communities like Port Colborne and Fort Erie  and Welland would carry on as fully functioning hospitals.

Niagara Centre NDP MPP Jeff Burch

We learned years ago that this turned out to be baloney as the Port Colborne and Fort Erie hospitals were reduced to hollow versions of their former selves. And now, not surprisingly, we are watching that continued gutting of services at the Welland hospital site happen too.

Meanwhile, their  plans are apparently still underway with Ontario’s Doug Ford government to spend countless hundreds of millions dollars on building a so-called “south Niagara” hospital out in the fields of southwest Niagara Falls where land speculators and developers are chomping at the bit to pave over lands west of the Marineland Park area, including hundreds of acres of Thundering Waters Forest that hosts provincially significant wetlands.

This amalgamated Niagara Health System has been an unaccountable and costly body for residents in this region since its inception.

For more confirmation of that read the Open Letter from a Niagara MPP and Niagara area mayor below and their concern that this system is moving ahead with cuts at the Welland Hospital site with little or no public consultation.

One response to “Niagara MPP, Welland Mayor Blast Niagara Health System for Closing Beds, Services at Welland Hospital

  1. If we got rid of all the NHS staff on the sunshine list we’d be able to reopen hospitals instead of closing them. How can these people justify such wages with such poor management choices?
