Apparently it is “Parliamentarian” in Ontario to Tell the Truth

Niagara Centre NDP MPP Jeff Burch

If you ever met Jeff Burch, you might be struck by the Niagara Centre MPP’s mild-mannered voice and smile.

He seems almost too nice for the rough and tumble of today’s political arena.

And indeed, he would hardly strike you as the kind of person who could be ordered by Ontario’s Speaker of the Legislature to leave the chambers if he did not withdraw remarks about the province’s premier that were deemed to be parliamentarian.

Yet thrown out he was this November 2nd morning, along with more than a dozen other members of Ontario’s NDP Official Opposition Party, including Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates and St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens,  for hurling words considered improper at Premier Doug Ford over Ford and his government moving to use draconian measures in the name of a “notwithstanding clause” to order unionized public school workers to remain in school despite what they consider to be a breakdown in negotiating what they consider to be a fair  pay increase with the government.

Jeff Burch was ordered out of the legislature after failing to withdraw his use of the terms “dictator” and “thug” to describe Ford. At least one of the others was tossed out for calling Ford a liar

Ontario Premier Doug Ford – ‘dictator and thug’? You be the judge.

Unless you are one of the minority of Ontario residents who even bothered to vote in this past spring’s provincial election and who voted for Ford and one of his minions, you might wonder what is wrong with calling Ford a thug, dictator and liar – especially now with his jackboot response to the dispute with school workers and his move now to allow his developer friends to pave over what is left of our natural heritage.

However, here we are in Ontario – for better or worse.

Niagara At Large will have more on this later.
