In These Oct. 24th Municipal Elections, Vote for a Healthier, Greener Future for Us All!

A Brief Comment from Doug Draper, Niagara At Large

Taking drive through Niagara this beautiful weekend was another reminder to me how fortunate we are to still live in a region where we can travel for a few minutes from an urban area and be in places with farm fields, woodlands, wetlands and grassy meadows.

It was also another reminder of how much we need more elected representatives at the regional and local council level in all 12 of Niagara’s municipalities to stand up against the forces of destructive, unsustainable growth and greed, and protect what is left of the natural heritage our region has been blessed with.

On this October 24^th municipal election day, I urge as many of my fellow Niagara citizens as possible to go to the polls to vote for candidates with a track record, if they are incumbents, or a platform for the future, if they are running to win a seat for the first time, that demonstrates a commitment to protect and preserve our environment and to do everything we can at the local level to address the climate crisis.

In the year 2022, with all of the hard evidence we now have, regionally, nationally and globally, of the costly damage bad management of our environment can do, we can no longer afford politicians at any level of government who continue to embrace the position that we must be “open for business” at any cost.

Vote for a healthier future

We can be open for business, but it must be business and growth that does not destroy one more wetland or woodland or hectare of food-growing land.

But we need political leaders at the municipal level who have the imagine, the vision and the courage to fight for it.

This October 24^th, I urge you to vote for candidates in these municipal election who will make protecting and preserving our natural heritage, for our health and welfare, and for other species we co-exist with, a top priority.

Nothing less than our future is at stake.
