Ontario Election’s Over So Why Should Ford & Company Care About Our Hospital Crisis

Hospital, Health Care Horrors Won’t Stop Until Ford Repeals Bill 124, Takes Action

A News Release from Ontario’s New Democratic Party

A Brief Foreword by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large –

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his Tories have just won another majority government for the next four years, so why should they give a damn about our health care?

Thanks to Ontario’s Ford Government and provincial governments before for it, and thanks to succesissive federal governments, including the current Liberal Government of Justin Trudeau, our once proud, universal public health care system is going to hell.

These governments would rather continue cutting  taxes for the upper 10 per cent and spending billions of dollars on new tar sands pipelines and on highways set  to make their donors in the land speculation and development business  even richer than invest enough in our health care systems to keep them sustainable for ordinary Canadians.

And yet the majority of residents of voting age in Ontario either don’t vote or vote for these governments that continue to shortchange or essential resources.

As for Premier Doug Ford, who won’t give front-line heroes in nursing more than a one one per cent increase, he has stacked his cabinet, costing us countless millions of dollars more per year and is moving forward with highway expansion plans that will put even more cars and trucks on the road during a time of climate crisis, and will trigger even more urban sprawl over our farm and green lands.

And this is what we voted for or didn’t bother to come out and vote this spring.

Shame on us.

Now here is the news release frm the Ontario NDP-

Reacting to a Premier Doug Ford press conference, NDP Health Care critic France Gélinas (Nickel Belt) says that Ford is downplaying the crisis in Ontario’s hospitals to justify his government’s lack of action. Gélinas released the following statement:

“The painfully long waits, the rolling closures of entire hospital departments, and the hallway medicine will not stop until Doug Ford repeals his wage cap bill, and starts respecting health care workers.

This morning, I was horrified to hear Ford downplaying the crisis in Ontario’s hospitals. He doesn’t want to hear desperate pleas from health care workers, and doesn’t want to see the anguish patients are living through, because he doesn’t want to pay health care workers what they’re worth.

It is true that the health care worker shortage is nation-wide. But it’s also true that other provinces are fighting for their nurses, PSWs and doctors while Doug Ford is pushing Ontario’s health care heroes right out the door. When someone rushes to their local ER and finds the door locked, or a burnt out nurse is asked to take on yet another overtime shift, there’s absolutely no doubt who is to blame.”

  1. I feel myself getting angry at the thought that anyone in Ontario is going to complain about our health care crisis after we just had an election. Doug Ford was voted in with another majority when there were clearly two other parties who had plans to deal with our health care in reasonable and affordable ways. People in Ontario chose highways over farmland, costly privatization of care homes over not for profit care facilities. They chose to build new hospitals with no staff because they chose Doug Ford. Personally, I am disgusted with those who voted for Ford and even more disgusted with those who chose not to vote. No point in complaining now. We’re all stuck with Ford for the next four years so we just have to suck it up and try to be sensible in our own lives and hope Ford doesn’t completely destroy our health care and education.

Absolutely “shame on us”. We in Ontario are so passive about seeing and doing something about health care and the environment. Ford counts on the public being passive and acting helpless. The people need to rise.
