QUEENS PARK —NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) rose in the Legislature to demand a provincial plan for relief at the gas pumps as prices topped $1.83 a litre in Niagara Falls.
“I ask the Premier, have you looked at the price of gas lately? You have nothing to celebrate. Ontario residents are breaking under the cost of gasoline right now. I am saying to the Premier, his Government can and must play a role in offering relief at the pumps for Ontario residents. We’ve offered solutions and recommended using the Ontario Energy Board to try and shine a light on this industry and to ban gouging where it occurs. The Premier rejected that plan,
I ask this Government, what is your plan? How can you sit back and do nothing? How is this not a crisis you see worth solving? Oil companies are making billions in record profits. Companies like Shell are gouging Ontario residents and the Premier thinks a sticker on the pumps is the solution. Today the price of gas in Niagara Falls was $1.83/litre
In Niagara many people can’t get to work, to school, or to a hospital without a car. And the price of filling that car is breaking people. We know gouging occurs. When prices go up 14 cents over night, or just before a long weekend. We know that there is a lack of transparency when it comes to refineries. All of this leaves consumers open to being gouged.

This is a government that claims to care about people’s pocketbooks – if that’s the case, why are you refusing to even debate legislation that might help people at the pumps. Right now they need this Government to step in, and to use every tool available to bring down gas prices and give residents a break. We need a provincial response to gas prices, and we need it now,” said Gates from the Legislature floor.
On March 2nd, the NDP once again tabled the Fairness in Petroleum Products Pricing Act (Bill 91). The bill would allow the Ontario Energy Board to regulate gas prices and immediately ban gouging at the pumps that leads to wild swings in prices overnight or before holiday weekends.

Premiere Ford is not as stupid as he looks. The people of Ontario will get relief in gas prices but that won’t happen until we get closer to the election this spring. He will then be able to take credit for reducing the price of gas at the pump at the same time you will be getting your refund in the mail for your license plates which will date back two years. Now he will be able to say ”MY FRIENDS ………………. LOOK WHAT I HAVE DONE FOR YOU” and by the way don’t forget to vote for me in the upcoming election.
