“Another example of why removing profit from long-term care is overdue. ” – St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens
A Statement from St. Catharines MPP Jennie Stevens

ST. CATHARINES, Ontario — NDP MPP Jennie Stevens released the following statement in support of picketing workers and residents who have been put under additional strain at Revera’s Garden City Manor nursing home, which has been failing to adequately pay frontline workers and manage sick days throughout the pandemic:
“Frontline workers at Niagara’s long-term care homes deserve to be treated fairly, with adequate pay, vacation and sick days, so they can give the best possible care to residents.
“For two years, workers at Garden City have had to fight with management to get the basics, while fighting their own burnout and trying to give residents the care they deserve. Despite Ford’s promise to fix Ontario’s long-term care system, we’re seeing frontline health care workers in Niagara being mistreated by big long-term care corporations, which put profit before people.
“Revera is a billion dollar company and must take the concerns of these frontline workers seriously and remedy the issues they are facing today. Further, I am calling Ford to remove profit from long-term care and stop allowing big corporations mistreat Ontario workers.
“Ford should be working to shore up Ontario’s long-term care homes, improve staffing and ensure residents have high quality care so that we prevent another tragedy like the one that happened in homes throughout the pandemic. Frontline workers, residents and families deserve better,” said Stevens.
“Garden City Manor is a 200-bed for-profit long term care home in St. Catharines. The home is owned by Revera, a multinational billion-dollar corporation with over 55,000 residents across North America. Revera is currently subject to a $50M class action lawsuit brought forward by Ontario families.”
