Niagara Falls to be Illuminated – This Monday, June 21st from 9 to 9:45 P.M. & from 10:15 to 12 A.M. – for National Indigenous Peoples Day

Niagara Falls, Ontario – The Niagara Falls Illumination Board will be illuminating both the Canadian Horseshoe and American Falls in white and purple tonight from 9:00 to 9:45 P.M.  & 10:15 to 12:00 A.M. in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada.

White and purple are the colours of Wampum belts which are significant to Niagara Indigenous history. At the Treaties of Niagara councils held in Niagara in 1764, numerous wampum strings and belts were exchanged with some two dozen First Nations and the Crown.

All special illumination requests are reviewed and approved by the Niagara Falls Illumination Board, which has financed and operated the ;illumination of Niagara Falls” since 1925.

The Niagara Falls Illumination Board is made up of representatives from the City of Niagara Falls Ontario, City of Niagara Falls, New York, Ontario Power Generation Inc., New York Power Authority, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and The Niagara Parks Commission. It is the Illumination Board’s responsibility and mandate to finance and maintain the nightly illumination of both the Horseshoe and American Falls.
