Ontario’s Medical Heath Chief – Dr. David Williams – Is Leaving The Building

A Brief News Commentary by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large, followed by Statements from Ontario’s Opposition Parties

Ontario Chief Medical Heath Officer Dr. David Williams is firing himself out. And who knows if we will ever get the whole story behind that exit.

For quite some time now, during the darkest times of waves two and three of this killer virus washing across the Ontario landscape, one wondered when Dr. David Williams, the province’s Chief Medical Heath Officer,  would finally call it a nightmare and leave the building.

This Monday, May 31st. word has already leaked out that Dr. Williams is going to announce that he is doing just that – exit stage far right.

Indeed, there have been so many open letters from health professionals across Ontario, scolding Premier Doug Ford for not doing what he has always claimed he was doing – listening to the science rather than the worst among us in the business community, who have always chomped at the bit to get back to ‘business as usual’ when it was still too damn risky to do so.

And through all of this, there was Dr. Williams, often standing behind Premier Ford at news conferences, looking like he was in a hostage tape when it was his turn to speak. Then there was yet another round of health professionals from across the province, taking shots at Ford and Williams again for blowing off advice from others following the science.

Most recently, Ford and his disgraceful Conservative government have been under tremendous pressure from parents across the province to re-open our schools.

So what does he do. Instead of heeding any advice he might be getting from our top heath chief, he fires out a questionnaire to regional health officials across Ontario, and to school boards and teachers unions, asking them what they would recommend.

That just about says it all for Dr. Williams.

Now here are some statements from Ontario’s Opposition Parties –

Chief medical officer of health replacement welcome, but raises serious questions: Andrea Horwath

Ontario NDP MPP Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath want’s Ford Longterm-Care Home Minister’s head.

HAMILTON — Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath issued the following response to news that Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, will be leaving his post early, before the pandemic ends:

“The Official Opposition welcomes the idea of a new chief medical officer of health — a replacement who can give sound public health advice and communicate it clearly.

But it’s fishy that yet another person at the top of Doug Ford’s pandemic response is leaving before the pandemic is over – first General Hillier, and now Dr. Williams.

Chief medical officers of health in Ontario are chosen by an all-party committee. Why is Doug Ford skipping that process to ditch another player at the core of his team?

He certainly has some explaining to do.”

ONTARIO LIBERAL LEADER, STEVEN DEL DUCA REACTS TO THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF A NEW CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH

TORONTO – Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, issued the following statement:

“Ontario Liberals support the appointment of Dr. Kieran Moore as Ontario’s next Chief Medical Officer of Health, and wish Dr. Williams all the best as he prepares to depart. I would like to reinforce the importance of Dr. Moore’s independence, and his ability to speak truth to power fearlessly. Doug Ford can never again be allowed to ignore the advice of Ontario’s top Doctor.”
