Auditor General’s Report Confirms Ford Tories’ Will Destroy Climate as a Favour to Their Insiders

“(Ontario Premier Doug) Ford’s wilful ignorance about the imminent dangers of the climate crisis is already making all Ontarians less safe, and the consequences for future generations – our children and our grandchildren – will be unbearable if we don’t change course now.”                                                                       – Ontario NDP Climate Crisis Critic Peter Tabuns

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, right, and his Tory pal from Alberta, Premier Jason Kenney, favour the tar sands over addressing a potentially catastrophic climate emergency.

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP Climate Crisis critic Peter Tabuns and Environment critic Ian Arthur released this statement in response to the Ontario Auditor General’s report of the Ford government’s handling of the environment:

“The auditor general’s report puts into stark terms the disturbing reality that Ontarians face under the Ford government: we have a premier dragging us backwards in the fight against the climate crisis. Doug Ford is willing to destroy the environment in his quest to do favour after favour for insiders.

Ford has tried to pave over the Greenbelt three times. He cancelled Ontario’s cap and trade program illegally, and his government continues to use the pandemic as cover to ram through laws and Ministerial Zoning Orders that attack environmental protections.

Protecting what is left of Ontario’s natural heritage? For Doug Ford, it is now obvious that environmental protection is a big joke.

Ford refuses to reduce the emissions polluting our water and air, to protect our green spaces, wildlife and their habitats – and is now attacking the Conservation Authorities put in place to protect them.

Ford’s wilful ignorance about the imminent dangers of the climate crisis is already making all Ontarians less safe, and the consequences for future generations – our children and our grandchildren – will be unbearable if we don’t change course now.

The government must change its ways and take action to protect the environment and prevent the dangerous impacts of climate change.”

On November 13 2018 the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario issued a scorching report to the Ford government, warning even though Ontario has some of the most abundant water in the world, it is polluting much of it. Two days later Dianne Saxe was looking for a job with Mr. Ford claiming it was a cost cutting measure. Now if you can believe this, the Premier gave her duties to the Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk, like the AG didn’t have enough to do at the time, such as going after the NPCA for a long overdue financial audit. After reading the Auditor Generals latest scorching environmental report on the Ford government it seems like it’s Deja vu all over again.
