In Trumpland, 200,000 COVID-19 Deaths and Counting

And a President of the United States who now says that maybe the solution is “herd mentality”

As tragic as they may be for every stricken family, it is almost as if roughly 1,000 COVID-19 deaths each day in the United States of Trump have become nothing more than background noise.

Yet there should be no escaping the fact – in a country where, for tens of millions of Trump worshippers, facts don’t matter anymore – the United States reached a jarring milestone this past Saturday, September 20^th of 200,000 deaths, confirmed to be caused by this highly-infectious plague over a period of just six months since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global healthy emergency.

Two-hundred thousand and counting, in just six months! In a country where, just six months ago, said it would soon disappear “like a miracle,” and where he later suggested to the populace that drinking bleach, shooting up Lysol or having ultra-violet light bulbs implanted in the body would inoculate people against this plague.

Did you remember to take a dose of household cleaners today?

Two-hundred thousand Americans– people who were still here, only nine months ago, celebrating the holiday season and the dawn of a new year – wiped out by this virus.

That is more than three times the number of Americans killed in more than 10 years of fighting in Vietnam. It is a staggering number of deaths compared to the roughly 2,900 Americans who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks 19 years ago.

Yet this is a price that tens-of-millions of Trump supporters seem willing to pay to keep their dear leader in power.

Even with all of the sickness and death, and with audio tapes of Trump admitting that he knew last February how dangerous this virus could be, many Americans continue to pack Trump rallies like this one in Michigan earlier this September – most with no masks and no social distancing.

As much as Canadians and Americans who have loved ones and second homes on either side of the border would like to see the border crossings open again, this is the reason why, after six months, they remain closed to all but essential (mostly commercial) traffic, and will likely remain closed for many more months to come.

Is this the “carnage” that Trump, in his 2017 inauguration address, vowed to end?

A final thought here  for our American friends and neighbours, and for the mainstream media in the United States – start regularly calling it “the Trump Virus”.
