Niagara Falls, Ontario  – NDP MPP Wayne Gates is hoping the Niagara Region will make face masks mandatory in places that are inside and where distancing is not possible.

“This just adds one more layer of support for those who are vulnerable and will help us keep these numbers down,” said Gates.

“In the US and on farms here in Ontario we’ve seen how just a few cases of the virus can spiral out of control. We’ve worked too hard here in Niagara to go backwards, businesses will start failing if we shut down again so let’s add this measure to keep our numbers low and our residents safe.”

“We’re finally seeing our businesses opening again and bringing in much needed money – but we’re also bringing in a lot of people from outside of Niagara. This is one way we can keep Niagara safe, protect residents, and protect jobs here in Niagara,” said Gates.

In the City of Toronto, signs like this have become commonplace. Toronto’s council recently passed a bylaw making face masks mandatory inside places were social distancing is difficult or impossible

Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga and Brampton have all passed motions to make masks mandatory, accounting for four of the largest areas in Ontario. The Niagara Region will be holding an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss whether or not to make masks mandatory in Niagara. Residents are encouraged to contact their elected Regional Councillors and Mayors to voice their opinion about the issue.

“We recognize not everyone will be able to wear a mask, but hopefully if we can get the vast majority of people wearing masks we can shield those who are the most vulnerable. It’s a very easy thing to do and it will save lives and protect people. The Region and the municipalities have the staff to be able to able to enforce this so I hope they will approve this added protection.”
