Sadly, Yet Thankfully, Canada-U.S. Border is Closed for At Least One More Month

It’s Official. Border Closing extended to all but ‘Non-Essential Traffic’ until at least July 21st

Keep Border Crossing Closed to Trumpland Until End of Year, If Necessary

Thank You Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the role you played in continuing to keep the Canada-U.S. border closed

Well, what can one say? We are living in post-apocalyptic times, after all.

As someone who has spent most of my life crossing the border to the United States, and has made many dear friends in “the land of the free,” I never imagined a time would come when crossing that iconic Peace Bridge between Niagara, Ontario and Buffalo would be closed to all but mostly commercial, “essential traffic” for going on four months.

You would have to go back 102 years, to the misnamed “Spanish Flu” pandemic of 1918, to know the real life-and-death impacts of anything like this.

There are many lessons to learn from the 1918 pandemic – not least of which are the disastrous consequences of declaring the health emergency over and re-opening “business as usual” way too soon –  but there is a self-described “stable genius” south of the border in the White House who thinks he knows better than any health experts do.

So according to Trump and the holy sycophant serving as his vice-president, the COVID-19 disaster is over and, if only the United States would stop testing its citizens for it, there wouldn’t be any more cases.

Don’t let Donald Trump’s nuts cross this border and possibly undo all of the efforts Canadians have made trhough sacrifice to tamp down this killer virus. If the Trumpies hate other countries that much, let them stay home.

These nutbars declare this – much to the glee of their millions of their follow-them-to-the-gates-of-hell supporters – even as the U.S. leads every other country in the world (could this be another example of “American exceptionalism?)  With more than two million confirmed cases of COVID and is now rapidly moving toward 120,000 COVID –related deaths.

That is twice the number of Americans dying in the United States from a pandemic Trump said, as recently as this past winter,  would “magically” go  away than died in more than a decade of fighting during the War in Vietnam.

So Thank God Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and our country’s 12 Premiers have extended the closure of non-essential border traffic for at least one more month, with the next deadline for a closure started in March running to July 21st.

This cartoon,  mocking Trump’s decision to ask people attending his upcoming Tulsa, Oklahoma rally to sign a waiver that they won’t sue him or his affiliates  if they get a COVID-related sickness, pretty well sums up the madness in America today. So thank you Mr. Prime Minister for keeping these ‘it’s all fake news’ screwballs out of here.

Given the reckless and dangerous behaviour of the US. President and his millions of fans or supporters, I would go for keeping the Canada-U.S. border closed for at least the rest of this year, and for months into 2021 if necessary.

I conclude that with all due respect to my good friends in the United States and to states like New York, where Governor Andrew Cuomo there has done an heroic job of bringing the COVID case numbers down in his state.

Unfortunately, Governor Cuomo and his Canadian government neighbours cannot stop nuts from Georgia or Oklahoma or the Carolinas and other steps from coming up and wanting to cross our shared border.
