NDP slams Ford’s cruel cut to support for survivors
QUEEN’S PARK — Jill Andrew, Ontario NDP Women’s Issues critic, released the following statement in response to news that the Doug Ford government is cutting $1 million in funding for rape crisis centres:
“Doug Ford is making a cruel cut to funding that helps rape crisis centres support survivors with services like free counseling when we know the need is only growing.”
“The Liberals waited until they were on the cusp of an election to react to #MeToo and the surge in survivors seeking support, and now Doug Ford’s Conservatives are taking things from bad to worse for survivors of rape and sexual violence.
“I am urging the government to reverse this cut right away, because survivors deserve better than to be left on their own, waiting month after agonizing month to access supports following unthinkable trauma.”
A Brief Footnote from Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper –
This is the same Ford government that moved to take modern-day sex education classes from the public school curriculum and had some of its members leaving the provincial legislature last year to gin up a rally of anti-abortion crusaders on the lawns of Queen’s Park.
What is Ford and company going to do next? Force any and all women who become pregnant as a result of being raped to carry the fetus to full term?
Do the majority of Ontarians who did not vote for this radical right government really have to put up with this for another two years?
If Margaret Atwood wants to write another sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, she’s got the raw material right here
And if and when she finished writing it, Ford, like his late brother and Toronto mayor Rob, probably still wouldn’t know who Margaret Atwood is.
Before I finish, I also want to share a little bit of information about and a website link for the organization Ford and his government are now moving to remove financial support from.
