Niagara, Ontario – Just ahead of what is expected to be a close and hotly contested federal election, it is hardly unexpected that Canada’s current federal government has finally come through with $29 million in funds for the 2021 Canada Summer Games to be hosted in Niagara.
The announcement of the funds – a dollar for dollar match with those secured days ago from Ontario’s Ford government, was made this September 5th in Niagara by Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, François-Philippe Champagne, and comes just 10 days before the September 15th deadline for calling the federal election, set for October 21st.
“The Government of Canada heard the call from the municipal governments in Niagara and is always prepared to invest in our communities and young people,” Champagne said during the funding announcement.
Municipal leaders in Niagara learned in March 2017 that the region had won their bid to host the 2021 games in over the competing regions of Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo and Sudbury.
The games offer the promise of showcasing Niagara and boosting its economy while they are in progress and leaving the region with new and improved sport facilities for generations to come.
With the October election looming ever closer, Niagara’s municipal leaders and other partners involved in organizing and preparing facilities for the games, have been on the edge of their seats this summer, waiting for funding commitments from senior levels of government.
At the federal level, Andrew Scheer’s opposition Conservative Party is hoping to topple Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government this October and Sheer’s party would almost certainly take advantage of another opportunity to slam the federal Liberals had they not come through with their share of the funding.
