Niagara, Ontario – Niagara-on-the-Lake -Niagara Falls NDP MPP Wayne Gates joined a 7 year old Niagara-on-the-Lake resident, Maya Webster, to knock on doors in her neighbourhood collecting signatures for a provincial petition calling on the government to cover the cost of continuous glucose monitors for children with type 1 diabetes like Maya.
“Maya and her mother came to my office and made a presentation about the work she’s done in Ottawa and locally on trying to help those with type 1 diabetes who can’t afford these devices,” said Gates.
“I am absolutely blown away by how intelligent, compassionate and caring she is. Every single person who had the chance to talk to Maya signed the petition right away. It’s kids like her that are the example of how caring our community is. I was so proud to stand beside her and help her out today.”
Maya was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 2 years old. Since that time she has been in and out of the hospital because of the condition. She now uses a continuous glucose monitor which sends out alarms if her sugars are too high or low, helping her avoid hospital stays and life threatening complications.
Maya’s family is lucky enough to have coverage that allows them to afford this device, but Maya believes that every child should be afforded the same opportunity.
“We had a really successful day today collecting signatures from all my neighbours-it’s really great to have good neighbours that support me with diabetes,” said Maya. “This is important to me because since I got my monitor, I haven’t really needed to go to the hospital. I’m really lucky that my parents can actually afford benefits.”
Gates will be bringing Maya to Queen’s Park when the Legislature resumes to lobby directly for this coverage.
