Ford’s ‘Government for the People’ Continues Slashing Funds to Ontario’s Schools

Doug Ford Cuts Per-Student Funding

Government announcement another blow to students, teachers, education workers and parents

A Statement from Ontario’s NDP/Official Opposition Party

Posted April 26th, 2019 on Niagara At Large

(A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter and publisher  Doug Draper –

Three weeks after thousands of secondary school students across Niagara joined tens of thousands of their peers across Ontario in a province-wide walkout to protest Ford government cuts to education, the cuts just keep on coming.

More than 200 students join at Holy Cross Secondary School in St. Catharines/Niagara join an April 4th, 2019  province-wide walkout to protest cuts the Ford government is making to their education.

And look forward to more cuts to come. In Doug Ford’s Ontario, we may end up with online courses and home schooling for everyone folks.)

QUEEN’S PARK — Marit Stiles, Ontario NDP Education critic, released the following statement in response to the Ford Conservatives’ Grants for Student Needs (GSN) funding allocation:

“On top of Doug Ford’s scheme to cut thousands of teachers and education workers, on Friday the Conservative government confirmed the deep cuts to education signalled in the budget. Not only is overall funding failing to keep pace with inflation, which amounts to a cut, but the Ford government is shamelessly cutting per-student funding.

As walkout in front of Holy Cross Secondary School in St. Catharines continued this past April 4th, , drivers honked their horns and offered students  waves of support.

These cuts will hurt students, education workers and families. Classrooms will be overcrowded, programs will be cut and students will have even fewer opportunities and resources.

The overall GSN budget not only fails to undo the deep, painful cuts Doug Ford is making in education, it will make things much worse.

Students already facing larger classes and fewer course options will now also have to cope with the complete elimination of the Local Priorities Fund and reduction of millions in direct funding for programs that support parent engagement, student employment and much more.

We’ll be working to analyze the full impact of this announcement on students, teachers, education workers and families. What we do know is that our kids deserve more support in the classroom, not less.”

  1. Funny as I just read previous story about announcement provincial government was cracking down on dangerous drivers near school buses. My first thought was “I wonder how long before they announce they’re doubling the maximum capacity of students on those same buses? Guess we didn’t have to wait long.
