Ford’s so-called “Government for the People” Will Fine Gas Station Owners $10,000 A Day For Failing To Carry Propaganda Stickers

“This is a new low, even for Doug Ford. It’s bad enough that he’s wasting public money on partisan promotion, but now he’s threatening private business owners with massive fines for failing to post Conservative Party advertisement. So much for free speech.”                                                                                                           – Peter Tabuns, the NDP’s Energy and Climate Change critic

A News Release from Ontario’s Official Opposition (NDP) Party

Posted April 12th, 2019 on Niagara At Large

A Brief Foreword from Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper –

Doug Ford. Is he Ontario’s premier or is he BIG BROTHER!

This is the kind of rule you would expect to see a government force on private businesses in a fascist state!

Gas station owners should tell Premier Doug Ford to go  take his propaganda stickers to hell with him.

Our American neighbours put up with a lot, but  would never put up with this kind of strong-arm crap. They would be up in arms with government spending their tax money for totalitarian B.S. like this, and so should we!

QUEEN’S PARK – The Ford Government isn’t just spending thousands of public dollars on gas pump stickers promoting a partisan campaign against carbon pricing – yesterday’s budget bill revealed that Ford plans to fine gas stations $10,000 a day if the businesses fail or refuse to post the stickers.

Ontario Finance Minister Vic Fedeli (right) looks on while Premier Doug Ford laughs uproariously during budget deliberations this April 11th. Out of the budget, comes funding for a propaganda sticker for slamming federal measures to put a cost on climate-altering carbon pollution

The stickers, which Ford will use public money to produce and distribute, denounce the federal carbon price being applied to provinces without a carbon pricing strategy. Doug Ford cancelled Ontario’s cap-and-trade program as a big favour to big polluters.

“This is a new low, even for Doug Ford,” said Peter Tabuns, the NDP’s Energy and Climate Change critic. “It’s bad enough that he’s wasting public money on partisan promotion, but now he’s threatening private business owners with massive fines for failing to post Conservative Party advertisement. So much for free speech.

“From sticking his slogan and party colours on license plates, to threatening gas stations that fail to carry Conservative party advertisements, Doug Ford is spending a lot of people’s money on himself and his party.”

Tabuns said both the sticker — which does not include items like the provincial gas tax, making it inaccurate and biased — and the fine need to be cancelled immediately.

Background:

Niagara At Large will be posting information to show why this gas station sticker is so misleading and fails to tell the whole story when it comes to the cost of carbon and climate change for present and future generations of people soon. Stay tuned.

  1. Linda McKellar

Maybe he got this idea from the “Canadians for Trump” bumper stickers now required to cross the US border.

A Brief Note from Niagara At Large – For the record, the story about the requirement to have on your vehicle a “Canadians for Trump” bumper sticker to cross the border was an April Fool’s Day joke piece produced and posted by Niagara At Large. Having said that, I certainly get Linda McKellar’s point.- Doug Draper

  2. Just curious about this despicable, fascist act. Is the Sticker pictured and approximation of the gas sticker or an official copy? It’s just that I can’t find any other images online Thank you

A Reply from Niagara At Large to Barry Wilson’s question – The sticker pictured in the story is an image of one produced by the Ford government and obtained and published by numerous mainstream media outlets following the tabling of the government’s budget this April 11th.
That is not to know now whether the information on this sticker or the way the information is pictured will not be amended in some way in the days or weeks ahead.
But even if it is, let’s not lose the central point here.
What is a so-called Conservative government and a party that historically believed in not getting in the face of private businesses, doing with a plan that contemplates forcing private countries, under threat of prosecution, to put a sticker on their private property that contains information the Ford government knows is already being used by its political allies as a key political talking point for the coming federal election.
I wouldn’t what Ford’s Conservatives would do if a left-leaning or liberal government were elected and tried to use force of the law to make private sector parties do the same thing with messages they want to get out there on climate change, a living wage, pharmacare, etc.?
We could hear Doug Ford bellowing like Homer Simpson after a long night sitting at the end of a bar already.

  3. If Ford thinks it’s democratic to force businesses to put up propaganda, he would also believe that those who don’t switch their current license plates for the new ones being issued, can be fined until they do.
