“We all know that affordable housing is an essential building block in the foundation of healthy lives for individuals and families. Each year, National Housing Day is an opportunity to recognize all the work being done to provide affordable housing to those in need. It is also an opportunity to draw attention to the solutions that are possible here in Niagara. Today that is our focus, the tools that we can use to create appropriate and affordable housing to address our local need.” ~ Henry D’Angela, Board Chair, Niagara Regional Housing (NRH)
Niagara, Ontario – As the availability of affordable housing continues to be a challenge in Niagara, local stakeholders joined together on the 20th Anniversary of National Housing Day to share information and tools to support affordable housing development.
For the third year in a row, Niagara Regional Housing, Niagara Region and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) partnered for this event, with the City of St. Catharines also sponsoring this year.
National Housing Day commemorates the 1998 declaration by the Big City Mayor’s Caucus that homelessness in Canada had reached crisis proportions.
Each year, Niagara has recognized the day with an event designed to move affordable housing forward in the region. This year, National Housing Day focused on tools to help developers interested in finding solutions to the shortage of suitable, affordable housing across Niagara.
Participants discussed:
- Niagara’s current housing market
- Ontario Affordable Housing calculator
- NIMBYism (“Not In My Back Yard”)
- Niagara’s 10 Year Housing and Homelessness Action Plan
- New Regional Official Plan
- Affordable Housing Strategy now in development
Mayor of St. Catharines, Walter Sendzik, shared his call to action regarding the vital goal of creating more options for affordable housing in Niagara.
