Ontario Premier Doug Ford

Queen’s Park –  Ontario’s  NDP’s critic for mental health,  Bhutila Karpoche, said that Doug Ford is making things worse for children in Ontario who are facing the highest rates of mental health-related emergency room visits and hospitalizations in the country, according to a new report.

The report by Children First Canada and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, analyzes data from major research organizations including Statistics Canada and the Canadian Institute of Health Information.  It found that in 2016 alone, 16,291 children in Ontario were hospitalized for mental health-related issues, more than double the number recorded in Quebec, which ranked second.

Doug Ford announced $330 million in cuts to mental health supports earlier this summer.

“Instead of helping, Doug Ford is taking us from bad to worse by cutting millions in mental health funding at a time when children in Ontario need the most help,” said Karpoche, NDP MPP for Parkdale-High Park.

“Doug Ford should be providing solutions instead of taking away mental health support from families and children and our already underfunded health care system.”Children First Canada said that children are going to hospitals due to lack of other options in their communities.  The data also shows that a growing number of children are ultimately resorting to suicide.

“It is absolutely unacceptable that thousands of children in our province are having to go to hospital emergency rooms for mental health treatment, while others tragically resort to suicide,” said Karpoche.  “Doug Ford must begin taking the reality facing our children seriously, and start helping instead of making matters worse with continued cuts.”

Add to the above list of people on this slide, circulating around social media sites, people with mental health challenges

(A Brief Note from Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper – Thanks to Doug Ford, Ontario’s new “buck-a-beer” premier and his self-described ‘Government for the People,” at lease these children won’t be subjected to an updated sex education curriculum in the schools before they suffer further mental health decline and consider resorting to suicide.

That is sure something that the  holier-than-thou crowd that makes up part of supporters – supporters that, given the vote breakdown in this spring’s Ontario election, make up minority of the province’s population – can praise the lord for.)

  1. It’s not just the cuts. Add to that the reversal of the age appropriate sex education for Ontario students and many young people will return to the closet in shame and be bullied ending up DEAD! He’s pouring gasoline on the fire.
