Save Ontario’s Current Sex-Ed Curriculum!

From Rayne Fisher-Quann, an Ontario citizen living in Toronto

Posted July 16th, 2018 on Niagara At Large

Ontario recently announced plans to revert to a 20-year-old sex-ed curriculum, rather than continue with the current curriculum which covers issues like consent, online bullying and safety, and discussions around same-sex relationships.

Petition starter Rayne believes this move will set sex-ed back decades and put students at risk — if you agree, sign today.

Under the Conservatives’ new plan, this could all change. All of the topics I mentioned before will be either seriously revised or removed altogether. This will be catastrophic for the future of our province.

In more ways than one, I grew up with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). Both my parents are teachers, and I grew up hearing stories about his classroom.

The saddest of these stories were the ones he’d tell about girls at his school showing up pregnant to their grade six graduations. This happened multiple times before the curriculum change of 2015.

The fact is, our children need sex-ed and there’s nobody better to provide it than trained, educated professionals working with a curriculum created and intensely examined by experts.

Don’t let the conservative party take away the education that our province so badly needs. Please sign and share this petition.

BRING BACK THE ABACUS! This is pandering to the fringe.

When I see the groups protesting age appropriate sex education it is obvious that the parents themselves will never be capable of teaching or want to teach their own children, either based on religious doctrine, their learned prejudices and bigotry or their own trepidation regarding speaking about sex. This means they are unwilling and unable to teach their children so they will just have to learn it on the street, the “good old fashioned method”. When the topic is made clandestine, it naturally becomes intriguing, like forbidden candy. This also leads to perpetuation of bullying of children with same sex parents or LGBTQ students. The suicide rate of such students may very well suffer proportionately.

In Germany, the sex education programme is age appropriate and modern and they have the lowest rate of teen pregnancy and STD’s among first world nations. Texas teaches abstinence only and has the highest rate of teen pregnancies in the US. Hmmm. Curiouser and curiouser. (Lewis Carroll).
