Why Have Ontario’s Liberals Waited So Long To Fund Long-Term Care Beds?

‘Ontario’s Liberal Government Had 15 Years To Fix Crisis In Long-Term Care’ – Cindy Forster

Queen’s Park, Toronto  – Having spent seven years in office fighting for urgently needed long-term care beds in the Welland riding, MPP Cindy Forster asked the Liberal premier why the government has left Ontario seniors behind for over 15 years and only now – with 45 days left in office, making a last ditch attempt to win votes with empty promises.

“The people who built this province and built our communities deserve comfort and dignity as they age, but too many people in Welland – and across Ontario – cannot get the seniors care they need,” explained Forster.

Forster argued that anything the Liberal government wanted to do, they could have and should have already done, having had 15 years to fix Ontario’s long-term care crisis. Instead, their cuts and budget freezes have caused Ontario’s long-term care system to crumble. Meanwhile, the Conservative leader has will only make things worse by vowing to cut over $6 billion from the services Ontario families depend on.

“Over 32,000 people are on wait-lists for long-term care and too many people simply cannot get the seniors care they need, in their own language, with the foods and the cultural activities that they’ve lived their entire lives with,” Forster said.

“With just 45 days left in office, does the Premier regret not making seniors care a priority – and leaving people across Ontario without the care that they need?”

Only New Democrats have a plan that offers families a change for the better. An NDP government would create 40,000 more long-term care beds, including 15,000 new beds over the next five years, while ensuring every resident is offered a minimum of four hours of hands-on care per day, as well as updating the Long-Term Care Residents’ Bill of Rights to give couples the right to stay together, and launching a province-wide ‘find-and-fix’ inquiry into systemic problems in our care system.”
