My Stand, Our Future – And Saying ‘No’ to the Kinder Morgan Tar Sands Pipeline

A Message from Canada’s Green Party Leader Elizabeth May

Posted March 28th, 2018 on Niagara At Large

Dear Friends,

I was arrested on Friday (this past March 23rd) for protesting Kinder Morgan’s risky pipeline and tanker scheme.

Canadian Green Party Leader Elizabeth May arrested at protest over tar sands pipeline in B.C.

Violating an injunction is not a step I took lightly.

Beforehand, I reflected on those things that I regard as sacred. I know many members and supporters share my commitment to our waters, to the stewards of this land, and to the democratic fabric of our country.

That’s why I felt obliged to stand against this disastrous pipeline and tanker project.

So many of us long for a future that embraces strong relationships between the people and the planet; that values our environment over corporate greed and political gain. And that’s exactly why it is so important for us to stand up for this future together.

As I stood on Burnaby Mountain, I thought about what kind of country — what kind of world — we will leave to our children and our grandchildren if we just stand by as the government plays political games at the expense of the environment, our eroding climate stability, and the health of our communities. I knew then that I was doing the right thing — standing up to say enough!

In our Green vision for the future, there is no place for regressive fossil fuel projects. Our priority is the rapid transition to a post-carbon economy. That means green infrastructure, well-paid jobs, and respectful relationships with the Earth, Indigenous peoples, and one another.

Taking action in solidarity,
Elizabeth May
Green Party of Canada

P.S. My actions last March 23rd  wouldn’t have been necessary with a government that kept its word. The Kinder Morgan pipeline should never have been approved based on the shoddy process before the National Energy Board (NEB).
