Ontario NDP Member Demands Action For St. Catharines/Niagara Family Waiting Months For Their Autistic Child To Receive Appropriate Care

“This situation has literally torn this family apart. Remi’s mom has six other children who have had to be moved out of the house so that they can be safe. Remi and his mother live in a space where everything is locked. She calls it autism jail.”              – Ontario NPD Critic Monique Taylor

Queen’s Park, Toronto  – Monique Taylor, the NDP critic for Children and Youth brought the case of 10-year-old Remi Ranger and his family all the way to the legislature, and called on the government to step in and help the family, which is in crisis waiting for treatment for Remi.

Remi has severe autism and other complex needs that cause him to be very violent with himself and others. Due to a seizure at school, he ended up in the hospital where spent 24 days. During that time, he had no treatment – the family was told that’s because the symptoms were all related to his autism.

“He was discharged last Friday and his mother was told she was on her own while they wait for a placement at the Child and Parent Resource Institute in London, which will not come for another five months” said Taylor.

“This situation has literally torn this family apart. Remi’s mom has six other children who have had to be moved out of the house so that they can be safe. Remi and his mother live in a space where everything is locked. She calls it autism jail.”

Taylor said the Wynne government is letting the Remi and his family down.

“Caring for Remi is round the clock, 24 hours a day. He bites and hurts himself and his mother. The situation is simply too much to handle. This family is in crisis and desperately needs help,” said Taylor.

“What will the minister do to ensure Remi and his mom get the help they need immediately?” she asked.
