‘A home to a teeming array of marine wildlife, including the endangered leatherback turtle and blue whale’
A Message from Daniel Green, Deputy Leader of Canada’s Green Party

My patience with Prime Minister Trudeau is starting to wear thin. His cabinet recently proposed that the Laurentian Channel in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence — home to a teeming array of marine wildlife, including the endangered leatherback turtle and blue whale — be designated as a Marine Protection Area (MPA).
That sounds great. But there’s a catch.
The Liberals’ proposed regulations allow for oil and gas exploration in 80% of this area.
Drilling and seismic blasts would damage the channel’s delicate ecosystems, and an oil spill would be devastating. How can Trudeau champion the protection of wildlife while expressing support for the very activities that endanger these species?
Protection should mean protection. Instead of following through on his campaign promise to protect 5% of Canada’s oceans by the end of 2017, our Prime Minister is currying favour with the oil and gas industry. Drilling and seismic blasting is not protection.
Join me in calling on Justin Trudeau and Minister of Fisheries, Dominic LeBlanc, to ban oil and gas exploration in the Laurentian Channel.
We often hear Prime Minister Trudeau being compared to French President Emmanuel Macron—both viewed as youthful and forward-looking leaders. But while Macron has recently announced a French ban on any oil and gas exploration, Trudeau has yet to put the policies behind his brand.
Tell the Liberal government that the protection of the Laurentian Channel must take priority over the continued pursuit of non-renewable, dirty drilling.
Thank you for your dedication to our common goals. Our growing voices will surely make a difference.
