Niagara, Ontario – Considered one of the world’s most exciting saxophonists, Pat LaBarbera comes to the TD Niagara Jazz Festival in 2017 with one huge fan club.

Jazz giant Pat LaBarbera in Niagara, Friday, June 9th for TD Niagara Jazz Festival
This Juno award-winning musician is regarded as jazz royalty and will be the featured performer at SAX IN THE VINEYARD at Henry of Pelham Winery, Thursday, June 8th at 7pm. But if you want to get close up and intimate with this astonishing musician, join him at the Niagara Artist Centre this Friday, June 9th, at 1pm. LaBarbera will be hosting a ‘Jazz Improvisation Clinic’ from 1pm to 3pm. at the NAC studio, 354 St. Paul Street, St. Catharines, where participants can enjoy playing, talking, or simply listening.
LaBarbera is a multi-talented jazz tenor, alto and soprano saxophonist, clarinetist and flautist. He has played with many of the great musical icons of our time, from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie, to The Supremes, The Temptations, and Stevie Wonder. For seven yearshe toured and recorded as featured tenor saxophone soloist with the Buddy Rich Band. His music has taken him around the globe, but for more than thirty years he has called Ontario home, and now teaches with the Faculty of Music at Humber College.
Jazz improvisation is that intricate and passionate form of jazz where spontaneity and creative conviction collide, with an almost intuitive sophistication. LaBarbera is the master of this dynamic jazz form. At
Friday’s clinic he will share his almost encyclopedic knowledge of improvisational theory, as well as his reminiscences from a long and colourful career. “It’s a dream come true to have Pat LaBarbera here,” said Festival Co-Creator Peter Shea. “ We are deeply honoured, and urge anyone who wants to hear him play, ask him questions about his life, career, or about the music business in general, to please join us this Friday.”
This unique clinic is part of the 4th annual TD Niagara Jazz Festival’s Canada 150 celebration initiative, LIVE LEARN JAZZ: A Canadiana Suite Series, dedicated to teaching, inspiring and informing all music fans. This is your chance to talk ‘hard bop’, jazz ‘improv’, composition, chord complexity, substitutions, and even find out what ‘free blowing’ is all about anyway…. Who can resist that?
