Niagara At Large is Back

–         So Send in the Clowns

A Brief One from NAL publisher Doug Draper

Posted June 1st, 2017 on Niagara At Large

So where I was before I was so suddenly interrupted some 13 or 14 days ago by little gremlins wreaking havoc inside my hard drive?

Oh yes, I think I had just finished posting a commentary on Niagara’s regional council and how no code of conduct is going to cure that scary clown show.

In all fairness to the dozen or so good members on that council who are at least trying to focus on issues that truly matter to people across this Niagara region, next year’s municipal elections cannot come soon enough to sweep out the rest.

I see that at least one of those who falls outside my list of those I hope survive next year’s housecleaning – St. Catharines regional councillor Andy Petrowski –agreed this last day of May to take at least a temporary leave of absence after image of a naked woman, her legs spread widely as she sat on a stool, was emailed to about a hundred other people from a device loaded with his government-issued email account – an account Petrowski claims some other individual got hold of to perform the naughty deed.

In a sorry exhibition of scapegoating and projection, some of the others on the regional council who have more often provided Petrowski oxygen and lined up with him on other battle fronts over the past two and a half years of this council term, and for four years of the last term, are now claiming that maybe the council can get back to the business of the people now that Andy and his antics are not in the way.

Fat chance that will happen with the current make-up of this council.

It takes a concerted team effort to put on the kind of show so many people in this region have told me has turned them off following it any more, let alone sitting in the gallery or, worse yet, ever applying to appear as a delegation.

If you wonder what I mean, just go to the Niagara Region website and click on almost any video of a council meeting from the past year or so, and watch for a while. Suffer your way through four or five of those meetings, and I will rest my case.

Grab a notebook while you are watching those council meetings and start writing down names of bad actors. Take Andy Petrowski out of the equation, if you will. It won’t be long before you’ve compiled quite a list.

I’ll be compiling lists of them here in the months leading up to next year’s municipal elections. Let’s see how much our lists match.

In the meantime, the gremlins have been purged – at least from this side of the line – and we’re back in business here.

So stay tune to Niagara At Large for more on this and for posts on other issues and events of concern and interest to people in our greater, cross-border Niagara region.
