A Brief one from Doug Draper
Posted April 21st, 2017 on Niagara At Large
It is hard for me to believe that the very first Earth Day was held 47 years ago this Saturday on April 22nd, 1970.
The date fell on a weekday then and I am the person in the photo below, wearing a gas mask and holding the sign that reads’ “If you aren’t part of the solution, you are part of the pollution.”
I was with a few of my high school classmates and our principal agreed to let us out to picket in front of a Union Carbide plant in our hometown of Welland, Ontario which was notorious for emitting clouds of filthy dust and gases into the atmosphere. You could often follow the trail of this pollution for as far as the eye could see across the horizon.
Since that first Earth Day, it seems like we made quite a bit of progress in Canada and the United States in rolling back these more visible signs of pollution.
Then all at once along comes Donald Trump and company and we are in real danger of losing most, if not all the ground we have gained over the past 47 years.
It is up to each and every one of us to stand up, make our voices heard and make sure that doesn’t happen for the sake of the well-being present and future generations, and for all forms of life on this one and only oasis we have in the universe.
Make a vow to yourself today to be part of the solution!
Earth Day has evolved into Earth Week over the years and I will have more to say about the role we all should play in protecting our environment as the last week of April rolls on.
