City Warns Residents To Be Wary Of Door-To-Door Water Filter Salespeople

A Heads Up from the City of St. Catharines

(A Brief Forward to this release from Niagara At Large publisher Doug Draper – Please give the following a read and consider that if this is going on in St. Catharines, it may also be going on in other municipalities across Niagara.

Over my years as an environment reporter, I was all too frequently contacted by people who felt they were being pressed by questionable parties to purchase home water treatment systems.

Some of these sales people  could be quite convincing in their delivery of sales pitches layered over with fear-mongering and falsehoods about the quality of our tap water

So please be weary and as Mark Twain, would say, have your B.S. detector working.)

Now here is the City of St. Catharines advisory –

St. Catharines/Niagara, Ontario – Residents should be on alert for door-to-door salespeople claiming to be authorized by the City to install water filters.

The City of St. Catharines does not authorize organizations to sell or install water filters on its behalf.

“Residents should always ask to see ID when someone presents themselves as being from the City,” says Mark Green, manager, environmental services. “City employees are required to present photo identification before asking to enter your home.”

Residents are also advised not to provide any bills, contracts or statements to door-to-door salespeople.

Concerned residents should politely ask the salesperson to leave, and should contact police if the salesperson becomes aggressive.
