Trudeau’s Reversal on Reforming Canada’s Election System is Act of Betrayal

“This cynical decision is designed to let the Liberals keep power for longer. But Justin Trudeau is about to learn that when you break people’s faith, you will reap what you sow.”

A Message from Canada’s Green Party Leader Elizabeth May

Canada's Green Party leader Elizabeth May who has tried hard to work with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on climate change and other issues, is now feeling betrayed by him.

Canada’s Green Party leader Elizabeth May who has tried hard to work with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on climate change and other issues, is now feeling betrayed by him.

I feel more deeply shocked today by this government’s actions than any other time in my adult life.

Thousands upon thousands of Canadians put faith in this Prime Minister’s direct promise that 2015 would be the last election under first-past-the-post. He has broken that promise.

I never expected anything other than appalling decisions from Stephen Harper. But when you believe in someone and they let you down, that is much harder.

This cynical decision is designed to let the Liberals keep power for longer.

But Justin Trudeau is about to learn that when you break people’s faith, you will reap what you sow.

It’s not too late. Demand that Justin Trudeau reverse this decision, and recommit to keeping the promise he made to all Canadians.

Despite spending millions of dollars on the issue, when our feminist PM didn’t hear the answer he wanted, he threw his two young women ministers under the bus, and callously broke his word.

This betrayal is one felt by all voters, volunteers, and activists who worked diligently to make this country’s democracy fairer and stronger through meaningful electoral reform. Demand that the Prime Minister reverse this terrible decision, and live up to his promise to Canadians.

Thank you for your continued support. Canada needs it.

Elizabeth

    • YES Carla.

Joseph is right too. The NDP blew it BIG time. That’s what happens though when people are afraid and hated the Conservatives so much that they turned to someone they thought had a chance to defeat them. The NDP was finally getting respect when poor Jack Layton died. He would have kicked a$$. A Green/NDP coalition might work…but with MAY as leader. Introducing electoral reform and pharmacare alone would win an election. I respect May. She says what she thinks, not what people want to hear.

BREXIT and other recent occurrences in the world are all reactionary based on fear. Fear mongering works. Like Trump’s election, I think such reactions were protest votes that got out of hand, people were shocked that their protests actually won and now they are reaping a harvest of chaos.

Heaven forbid if the CONservatives get back in with remarks like Kellie Leitch, saying “I have no control over what other people do” about the mass murderer from Quebec even though she was part and parcel of promoting xenophobic hate. Such empathy. Truly a woman of the people, so long as you’re not Aboriginal, Muslim, Black, LGBTQ, etc., etc., etc. I thought the banner protest at her office was classic! Just the names of the dead.

What is most frightening is that the xenophobes and bigots are spreading world wide helped by our “fearless leaders”. NORMAL people have always been the silent majority but we must start, first of all, by educating ourselves as to the machinations of these liars, speaking up and even playing by their filthy rules. As Keith Olbermann said, we have to create a loud, even obnoxious left wing tea party to fight fire with fire. They understand nothing else.

  3. Carla Its about time the GREEN and the NDP got their acts straightened out and began to fight as one entity for the common folk of this country and not among themselves.
Yes!!! Linda I agree This country has been managed and mismanaged by corporate zealots intent on their own personal welfare for over 150 years and these governments in NO way, shape or form represent the peoples of this country, in fact the definition of DEMOCRACY is NOT part of their personal Bible…Yes!! Again Linda it is a sick scenario when a government is elected with 36% or 37% of the Total Vote and are in a position of a Corrupt DICTATORSHIP.
