A New Year, A New Chance To Stop Devastating Hospital Cuts Across Ontario!

  • Rallies to Stop the Devastating Hospital Cuts & Privatization of our Local Public Hospital Services

News from the Ontario Health Coalition, a province-wide advocacy group for quality public health care

You can help to save local public hospital services! We’re heading into the 9th year of real-dollar hospital cuts, the longest stretch in Ontario’s history. Funding for hospitals is now at the lowest rate of any province in the country. Local community hospitals are at risk of complete closure, while birthing, emergency departments and other services are constantly at threat. Thousands of hospital staff positions have been eliminated.save hospitals

By every measure, Ontario’s hospital cuts are deeper than any other jurisdiction. Virtually every service cut from our local hospitals is being privatized.

We have been giving reasoned submissions every year for 8 years regarding the cuts and the government is ignoring them. It’s time to step up the pressure. That’s why we’re holding rallies outside the Pre-Budget Hearings. We will be inviting the MPPs on the Ontario Legislature’s Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs to come out and join us and hear our concerns.

Rallies to Stop the Devastating Hospital Cuts & Privatization of our Local Public Hospital Services

Rallies will be at 12 noon at each of the Pre-Budget Hearings (specific locations TBA):

Hamilton – Monday January 18

Windsor – Tuesday January 19

Thunder Bay – Wednesday January 20

Sault Ste. Marie – Thursday January 21

Ottawa – Friday January 22

Toronto – Monday February 1 at Queen’s Park

  1. This process has been going on for years and is accelerating. The bean counters who now run facilities, as opposed to medical professionals, only look at the bottom dollar and quantity, not quality of care. Small local hospitals, for the most part, offered good services and were the ones who almost always balanced their budgets which was certainly true in Niagara…go figure! This is due to the fact that there are now, in these mega facilities, layers of costly bureaucracy (should be spelled burrocracy) that serve no purpose or medical function yet somehow the government assumes this is an improvement. They are a waste of money.

This scenario is similar to the concept of factory farms and multinational corporations. Close all of the local facilities that are actually in touch with and invested in their respective communities and have previously offered good care and outsource to business enterprises that have no relationship with those they supposedly “serve”. Unfortunately, all of these private concerns are profit based. This is the current business paradigm and health care has become a business, not a calling and public service. No compassion, just treat people like cattle. Just keep the herd mooooving! The problem is, it is the service providers who have the bovine intellect, not the recipients. We are replacing our GOOD mom and pop equivalent services with Walmart style crap. Most medical professionals are disgusted with the situation and can only work with what they have at their disposal.

  2. Linda as Usual you come right to the core of this rotten debacle, a debacle where we see appointed peoples building empires at the expense of the taxpayers.
I had two bouts of Cataract Surgery and was informed prior to the first surgery that Laser Measurement was the most accurate at a cost of approximately $125.00. A year or so later while having the second eye done I was astonished to find the Laser Measurement cost had doubled? It was just after the Provincial Government and the doctors had reached a funding agreement….Thus I wonder and wondered if this was shifting the cost to the Patient while allowing the Government to cut the funding? Just recently and again while visiting a doctors office I found a very perturbed and somewhat angry doctor basically ranting over the funding cuts imposed by this Provincial Liberal Government… When will it end??? Yes Linda !!! I agree We certainly do need a recall process to protect the Citizens against a government that does not represent the electorate as they were elected to do…..Yes Linda You, Pat Schofield, the Yellow Shirts, and all the people who protested in VAIN the actions of the Empire Builders and these Corporate Governments
