News from Brock University
(A Brief Note from Niagara At Large – Given the many great performers, among them some of the most iconic artists of the past 40 years or more in the world, that so many people across this Niagara, Ontario region and beyond had the pleasure to see here, the closing of this theatre is a cultural milestone in the regon.)

After 45 years, 1,450 shows and hundreds of thousands of entertained guests, Brock’s Centre for the Arts is ready for its finale.
Since 1969, the storied venue has hosted legends such as Bob Geldoff, Dizzy Gillespie, Anne Murray, Darlene Love, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Dianna Krall, Phyllis Diller, Matthew Good, and even Mr. Dress-Up. But on Thursday, April 23, the Sean O’ Sullivan Theatre will host the final HOT TICKET Centre for the Arts performance.
The cultural hub will wrap up its 45th and final season with award-winning Flamenco guitarist Jorge Miguel taking the stage for a spirited performance with his eight-piece ensemble of musicians and dancers.
The Jorge Miguel Flamenco Ensemble formed in 2002 to bring true Flamenco to audiences throughout Canada and beyond. Together, the group passionately honours the three pillars of Flamenco: the guitar (el Toque), the dance (el Baile) and the song (el Canté).
The show will be followed by a celebration with food, drinks and behind-the-scenes tours for those curious to see where showbiz magic has been made since 1969.
Debbie Slade, Director, Centre for the Arts, has been there for most of the centre’s 1,450 performances. When the centre closes, Slade will retire after 30 years of programming the venue. Other staff members will transition over to the City of St. Catharines-run downtown FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, which is taking over the Centre for the Arts programming.
Brock’s Sean O’Sullivan and David S. Howes theatres will be dismantled and their theatrical equipment will be used at the new Marilyn I. Walker School for the Fine and Performing Arts.
