Ontario Premier Slams Hudak’s Pink Slips Pledge – Cutting Jobs And Services Would Plunge Province Back Into Recession

News from the Campaign Office of Ontario’s Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne

This morning Premier Kathleen Wynne zeroed in on Tim Hudak’s reckless and radical approach that would cut jobs, reduce important services and plunge Ontario back into a recession.

Under the Hudak PCs vital services would be dramatically slashed, impacting all Ontarians. Jobs that would be lost and services that would be cut under the Hudak PCs include:

  • Water Inspectors who help keep our water safe.
  • Meat Inspectors who make sure our food is safe to eat
  • Workplace health and safety inspectors who ensure that employees are protected on the job
  • Corrections Officers who guard our prisons.
  • Hospital Support Staff who keep our hospitals running
  • Healthcare Researchers/Scientists who conduct world-leading research and save lives
  • Personal Support Workers who look after our parents and grandparents
  • College and other vocational instructors who teach trades and important skills
  • University instructors who mold young minds and prepare our students for the careers of tomorrow
  • Teachers who change the world
  • Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and daycare workers who instruct and care for our youngest children
  • Educational support staff who keep our schools running
  • Children’s aid workers who get at-risk kids out of harm’s way
  • Forest fire fighters who protect our communities
  • Nursing home inspectors who keep watch over some of our most vulnerable
  • Environmental inspectors who protect our air quality.

The Hudak PC proposal to slash 100,000 jobs would put Ontario’s economy at risk and plunge the province back into a recession. Fewer people at work will result in less money invested back into the economy, leading to thousands of layoffs of highly-skilled workers. Tim Hudak’s commitment to cancel major infrastructure projects would result in even more layoffs and reverse progress made to improve transit, bridges and highways.

Andrea Horwath’s NDP put Ontario’s economic recovery from the last recession at risk when they chose not to support the 2014 Liberal Budget, which would have made important investments in infrastructure and created jobs.

“Tim Hudak’s cuts would hurt families, cut critical services and devastate our economy.  His 100,000 Pink Slip Pledge would mean fewer teachers to support our children, fewer water and meat inspectors to keep us safe and fewer health care professionals to support our parents and grandparents. What is most troubling is these would just be the start of the Hudak PC cuts.”

  • The 2002 report by Justice Dennis O’Connor examined the fatal E.coli contamination of the drinking water in Walkerton Ontario. His report showed that the most serious case of water contamination in Canadian history could have been prevented by proper chlorination of drinking water. He also pointed to the region’s public utilities managers and cutbacks by the Harris-Hudak PCs as contributors to the tragedy.
  • In Justice Roland Haines’ report from July 2004 regarding concerns about food safety at a meat inspection plant in Aylmer, he criticized the Harris-Hudak PCs for gutting the meat inspection system in Ontario.  By forcing many meat inspectors into the private sector, vacancies were created for provincial meat inspectors. Justice Haines focused on how those applying for the vacated positions often had little or no experience in the meat industry and fewer and fewer experienced inspectors were on hand to mentor the recruits.
  • When the Harris-Hudak PCs left office in 2003, only 56 per cent – roughly half – of Ontario students were graduating. Today, 83 per cent of students are graduating due to investments made by the Liberal government in education over the past 10 years.

    What a CROCK!
100K cut in our bloated bureaucracy wouldn’t make a dent in Wynne’s scare tactics.
In the end, even government personnel will face severe consequences if Wynne’s policies are left unchecked.
Prosperity cannot be bought – It must be earned.
We can gently apply the brakes now or slam them on later.
    The choice is ours.

A thorny question to be sure, and deliberately so. Entitlements once put in place are difficult to remove. It is easy for a ruling government to pack its dependency base by creating a massive bureaucratic empire, a new elite if you will, replete with hierarchies that would baffle the Medicis.

For instance – daycare, quite a legitimate need in our modern society, that could have been resolved with a voucher system, morphed into a one-size fits all $billion per year juggernaught. Try and roll this back and guess what – all heck will break loose.

For instance – the Grand Duchy of Healthcare with its layers upon layers of bureaucracy, sinecures for partisan loyalists and their cronys. Just try to rationalize this gordian knot of entitlements. Niagara is a perfect example – the people of Niagara are being deprived of adequate hospital care, but we have more “medicrats” than doctors, nurses and essential support staff. Yet I’m certain that when there is a hint of cut-backs, there will be much noise and it will be the front line that gets cut.

For instance – the inverted pyramid that is the Ontario education system with its army of self-important meddlesome “educrats”, yet it is the teachers, many on contract with limited benefits if any, that are belittled and demonized for crushing the system with their demands. Instead of letting the teachers teach and be accountable to the parents, these educrats entrench their guilded positions by creating broader mandates for themselves with ventures into social policy and “co-parenting”. Talk about scope creep.
How to restrain this without taking it out on the teachers and destabilizing the system will certainly become an absurdly difficult logic puzzle.

How to reduce the burden on working families and maintain balance without sacrificing the front line will require the wisdom of Solomon. I’m not sure that type of leadership can be found in many of our candidates. Political survival seems to require pandering to the bureaucrats, the new elite and true holders of power in Ontario, at the expense of the rank & file, the perenial pawns to be sacrificed. Certainly a hack & slash approach will only inflame matters and won’t resolve the problem. Only the pawns will be hurt.

Politics has become so polarized and censorious that the intelligent debate needed to explore our options is being stifled. Elections have become little more than ritual and campaigns a kabuki theater … a legal necessity to legitimize the excesses of this new entitlement elite.

  3. The scotched earth policy of Harris/Hudak and goons sent Ontario spiraling down ward into the abyss, an abyss so large that the taxpayers in despair voted in a Liberal Government take over the disaster. Then this Liberal Government began by hiring so many consultants to tell them how to “ruin” the ship and they sailed off into the twilight of massive spending where these same consultants robbed the coffers blind.
eHealth….a $Billion give or take to consultants for nothing
Ornge……It is difficult to imagine the amount of nepotism and fraud
    Gas Plants….$ Billion plus
Pan Am Games …$500.000 plus to a discredited CEO +,+,+,
Plus Millions if not Billions spent on sport infrastructure.

It is beautiful to hear Ms Wynne pontificate about “her” total non involvement in the messes of this Liberal Government and attempt to exonerate herself from knowledge even though she was a high ranking manipulator of the Liberal Caucus. If you believe this I have a Bridge in the desert in the State of Arizona for sale cheap.
The NDP kept the Liberal disaster afloat too long and NOW to hear this Ms Wynne getting out her knives is a little too much…..Good Bye Ms Wynne you are NOT a winner you are a McGuinty Clone
