(Niagara At Large is posting the following for those who may wish to attend this service which, as we understand it, will be heavily attended and will require spill-over areas for those who may not be able to get inside the main reception centre. NAL’s best advice to those who wish to attend – Get there early!)

The memorial tribute and reception for the Welland regional councillor and former longtime MPP will be held Saturday, May 11, at Pleasantview Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 2250 Hwy. 20, beginning at 1 p.m.

Peter Kormos died suddenly at his Welland home on Saturday, March 30th at the age of 60. Cremation has already taken place.

“It is intended to be open to the public,” funeral home manager Mike Guttin said of the memorial.

Between the main building where the ceremony will take place and a special overflow area on the property set up with a live feed, more than 1,000 people will be accommodated.

The memorial is being arranged as per Peter Kormos’s personal wishes, being carried out by the executor of his estate, Guttin said.

Peter Kormos is survived by his mother Simone Dettlaff and siblings Mike, Elaine, Nadine, Mark and Sam. He is predeceased by father Michael Kormos.

Welland Riding MPP Cindy Forster, Peter Kormos’s Queen’s Park successor, anticipates a large turnout, with many people attending to “pay their respects and condolences to the family and close friends of Peter.”

“He made a lot of friends over the last 25 years,” Forster added. “He was well-liked and very respected. I’m glad people will have the opportunity to show that.”

Peter Kormos’s obituary reads; “In the spirit of Peter’s lifelong commitment to social justice, donations of time or financial support may be directed to your local charities that help those in need.”

An online book of condolence is available at www.pleasantviewcemetery.ca.

People are invited to share their memories of Kormos, as well as photos and video clips, online at the above website to help celebrate his life.

  1. My memories are of Peter with his trademark cowboy boots getting himself arrested while on the picket line with striking workers. this happened several times. His identity was with the blue collar and working class of workers, here in Ontario, he loved them and they loved him back.He never should have checked himself out of the hospital , I knew somebody else that did that, they got tired of waiting, they also died several days later, of heart attack, Peter was too young to die , he was needed at Regional Government.
