Few Made Clear The Futility And The Stupidity Of War Like Buffy In One Iconic Song

One More Remembrance Day note from NAL publisher Doug Draper

This just about sums it up around the travesty of wars and what Remembrance Day in Canada or Veterans Day in the United States should be all about.

It comes from the legendary folk singer Buffy Sainte Marie, and it comes out of her great song from the 1960s called ‘Universal Soldier’, which was also made famous or infamous, depending on your take on it, by the Irish folk singer Donovan.

This Youtube video, featuring Buffy, pretty well tops every thing this NAL publisher has tried to say about remembering our soldiers – well on top of some government voices that choose to blow bluster for more wars.

I thank Fiona McMurran, a Niagara representative for the Council of Canadians, for sharing this with Niagara At Large.

  2. I like the sentiment, and agree with it. We elect public officials to serve and protect us, from within and without, so we are ultimately to blame for war. If we don’t like what the government is doing, we can always rise up against it. But that doesn’t happen these days, not here anyways. We grumble about it and then turn on American Idol. The soldiers during the great wars truly fought to protect our freedoms and lives, but all too often now soldiers are fighting and dying to protect corporate interests.

One more thing: although I appreciate the song, Buffy includes Jains among those who fight in wars. Since Jainism is a religion of non-violence towards anyone (human or non-human), I’m led to believe that Buffy put that in there simply to make the song flow, and not that Jains actually become soldiers…

  4. Canada was once respected throughout the world as an emissary of peace, a country endowed with passion, concern and honesty, a country that Lester Pearson brought to the fore front in Peace Keeping integrity. NOW during the past several years this group in Ottawa has foresaken this role and set Canada along the path of being nothing more than a puppet and partner to the Warring countries of the World.
    It is a pity
