NDP Leader To Ontario’s Premier – Stop Election Threats And Pass The Budget

A Foreword by Niagara At Large

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty seems intent on playing a game of chicken with the opposition parties in the provincial legislature, leading one to won to wonder if he can count enough seats in that chamber to remind himself that he has a minority government that could be defeated at a moment’s notice.

Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath urges province’s premier to back off his election threat and pass a budget

While McGuinty insists that the NDP and Conservatives are demanding concessions that may cost provincial taxpayers billions of dollars, where has his government been on fixing an arbitration system that continues to rubber stamp unaffordable wage and benefit increases to police, teachers and other unions he seems to sleepin bed with? Why won’t he kick the high-priced teachers out of the early learning classrooms and abide by the advice experts gave him to allow early learning professionals nurture those children at half the cost? The list goes on, and this premier, that has run this province into a debt ditch so deep it may take generations to get out of it, has the nerve to threaten an election call.

Some of us may very well say; “Hey Dalton, make our day!”

A Submission from the office of Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath

Queen’s Park,  June 15  – New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath called on the Premier to stop the election threats, and work with all parties to pass the Budget.

“I want to spend the next four days working to pass the Budget. It’s disappointing that the Premier wants to spend the next four weeks trying to win back a majority,” said Horwath. “I want to keep working here to pass this Budget so parents can get the childcare they need and Ontario’s richest will pay their fair share. I plan to keep my word and pass the Budget, and I hope the Premier will keep his word and do the same.”

“Making minority government work is hard work. But, it won’t happen if the Liberals threaten to hit the campaign trail every time we hit a bump in the road,” she added.

Yesterday, Premier McGuinty threatened to call an election because a government committee had passed amendments to a 300 page omnibus bill connected to the Budget. New Democrats have committed to passing the Bill but are addressing serious concerns raised by the public. For example, Ontario’s Ombudsman says parts of the Bill will lead to “erosion oversight.” Dr. David Suzuki says other sections, “reduce the level of protection and undermine public management of cherished forests, lakes, and rivers and the immeasurable benefits they provide.”

“Nobody said making the Legislature work is easy.  But that is the job that Ontario gave us,” said Horwath. “My door is always open to discuss issues with the Premier and to work with all parties to tackle Ontario’s challenges. I hope the Premier sees reason and doesn’t call an election no one wants.”

  3. The Right Wing call for an election is typical and the fact corporate sponsored governments crave majority rule is basic, “CONTROL” Elections are supposedly DEMOCRATIC and as such each elected MP or MPP is supposedly there representing the electorate who voted for them whether it be in a Minority or Majority Scenario.
Minority Governments are not “NEW” in fact much of the social benefits the electorate rely on were enacted by MInority parliaments working together for the betterment of the masses whether Blue or Whiute Collared and that is how it is suppose to work in a DEMOCRACY.
The advent of Majority rule seems to and does skewer representation to the Corporate sector usually and basically at the expense of all the hard earned Social programs and this is also NOT NEW.
Honesty, Openness and Fair rule is all the people want from their elected choice, NOT “In Camera’ or as it was once called “Behind Closed Doors” deals that cannot bear scrutiny as seems to be the practice with a Majority government….
So! Ladies and Gentlemen MPs and MPPs get down to work with your fellow counterparts and make this Canada a better place for the Citizens..NOT only of Canada but of the World.
