A New Brief from the Niagara Volunteers for Bangladesh
Outside, it was blustery and damp. Inside, the hall was filled with warmth generated by friends, old and new, gathered together for Niagara Volunteers for Bangladesh’s eight annual fundraising dinner at the Westminster United Church in St. Catharines. On October 15, almost 350 people, from across the region and Southern Ontario, came to celebrate past successes and to continue support for projects serving impoverished women and children in Bangladesh.
The evening was filled with goodwill and great food. Everyone was treated to the graceful, traditional dances performed by Mahiya Habib, Lamia Sayed, and Jessica Amin.
Through the generosity of those attending the evening, Niagara Volunteers for Bangladesh raised more than $7,200 which will go to support the almost 300 students currently attending the Scholars’ Special School in Dhaka, the UTSA primary school in the slums of Chittagong, and schooling for the children of the ‘Tiger’ widows in the coastal region.
NVfB will contribute towards the Children’s Leukemia Assistance and Support Services purchase of an ambulance and continue income generation and potable water projects with the ‘Tiger’ widows of the South.
But the major portion will go to install a village latrine in the Northern village of untouchables. Without proper sanitation, the villagers have been forced to use the fields which puts them in grave peril of predators and has incurred the wrath of their neighbours. They face the imminent danger of eviction from their land which would leave them destitute, homeless and at the mercy of the elements.
NVfB could not take on these huge commitments without the contributions of dozens of volunteers and the generosity of this community. You have made it possible to push back against the ‘plague of poverty’.

My nephew held a high position in Bangladesh for the State Department, this country, through it,s geography has a lot of flooding problems to deal with , including a high birth rate, education of the poor is a key element if this new country is to suceed, while it derives income from clothing manufacture it needs to make a more value added product. The needs in health and good housing along with population control is a major concern in this region.like it’s neighbor India the caste system is hard to break.and an anachronism in this modern age.
