Saying Goodbye To Our Spectacular Fall Colours

A Brief Note from Doug Draper

I have so many friends who say that their favourite season of the year is Fall.

A fine Fall photo by Niagara resident Paul Kassay

There are days that are still warm enough to do outdoor things and, of course, there are those spectacular Fall colours. No doubt about it, a ride through Effingham in Niagara, Ontario or a walk through Buffalo, New York’s Delaware Park can be beautiful when the sun is sparkling through the red and yellow of changing leaves on a nice October day.Yet as a summer sort of a guy, I’ve always felt that if you could slow down Fall for a little while – I mean kind of put it on the slowest ramp down you can get on a turntable for a 33 RPM record –  it would make the transition to another long and cold winter a little more tolerable. Problem is, those spectacular Fall colours come and are gone pretty rapidly with the first strong winds and rain downpours, which usually always come together just about now. Then the trees are bare and there is nothing left but shoveling snow and ice off your walk and driveway.

Maybe not the best way to discuss Fall. But a friend of Niagara At Large, Paul Kassay, and an old friend of mine as someone who has worked so hard to preserve the history of the Crystal Beach park and preserve other heritage sites in the Fort Erie, Ontario area, has shared this photo. He’s a great photo artists and this is an image he has shared that more or less says goodbye to the beauty of Fall.

Share your views on this post, if you wish, and possibly share your own photos that highlight the character of our greater Niagara region on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border. You can even send what you think is a particularly fine photo of winter here, if you dare. You can send them to drapers@vaxxine.com.

  1. I love Alleghany and Algonquin in the fall. Paul “Mr. Crystal Beach” Kassay is a long tme friend, an excellent photographer and a valued historian.
