(Niagara At Large is posting this June 3 statement from Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak, MPP Niagara West-Glanbrook, following the announcement from Peter Kormos, MPP Welland, that he will not run for re-election in the fall.)
“Few MPPs will leave a more indelible mark on Queen’s Park than Peter Kormos.”
“He will be remembered as an iconic figure whose personal popularity back home in Welland was so great that even when the NDP was reduced from 74 to 17 seats in 1995, he handily won his hometown riding.”
“Anyone who has worked at the Ontario legislature during the past 25 years has a story to tell about Peter Kormos. Quick witted, always willing to speak strategy on legislative process, he was a walking encyclopedia of standing orders, procedure or just ways to rattle the government’s cage.”
“While it is sad to see mavericks like Peter Kormos and Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch leave, it is fitting that two of the most colourful characters in my time, or anyone’s time at Queen’s Park, will retire together.”
“Peter Kormos will be remembered as both affable and irascible, a man who stuck to his guns and never gave up his principles for the party line. Despite our political differences I have always felt a kinship with Peter, we both hail from Niagara and proudly share a Slovak heritage. On behalf of the Ontario PC Party I say best of luck in your life after Queen’s Park.”

one of few in present day politics that you could trust and that most others could take a lesson from on ethics if there is such a thing anymore (right wayne) Myself and many others will greatly miss his honest and ethical representation of the people.

An excellent post by Tim Hudak, at least appreciating the knowledge and strength of his key opponent and how much we all have in common. Thanks. I am going to miss Peter too,.

I’m not sure T. Hudak should be getting political traction by praising Peter Kormos. Frankly, I find the anti-science politics of T. Hudak and the Conservatives to be dangerous and misleading. They appeal to people’s base instincts ( save a bit in taxes to the detriment of society, and the world population) to get cheap, ill-uniformed votes.
He probably has a P.R team running his campaign, but I’m a bit surprised that he has taken on wind turbines. Sooner or later it will/should bite him where it counts.
And be assured, the Conservatives will not endorse an expanded Universal Health Care system. In health care, they prefer the move towards privatization. Again, ill-conceived. Down the road, they will/should pay the political price. Ask those who live in Vermont.
