On Labour Day long weekends – the last official weekend of summer – this carousel has long been a popular draw for young families, and for people of all ages with a kids heart who enjoy taking that magical five-cent ride. And this coming Sunday, September 4, you can save your nickels between the yours of noon and 5 p.m. and take the ride for free, thanks to Escarpment Views magazine.

Niagara At Large is posting below a media release from the City of St. Catharines where that Port Dalhousie carousel turns on those Sunday free rides.
NAL will also be taking some time off to enjoy this last long weekend of summer with you. Have a good one.

Read and ride for free at the carousel
Sept. 1, 2011 – There’s no need to raid the piggy bank to ride the Lakeside Park Carousel on Sunday.

Escarpment Views magazine is sponsoring free rides on the popular Port Dalhousie attraction from noon to 5 p.m. to celebrate its latest issue, which features a cover story about the carousel. The story was written by Patrick Wentzel, census chairman for the National Carousel Association in the U.S. Wentzel will be on hand with a slide show presentation about carousels throughout North America and information about the association.

“We’re delighted that the City of St. Catharines agreed to let us offer free rides to the public on the carousel and celebrate our autumn cover story about this wonderful attraction,” said Gloria Hildebrandt, Escarpment Views editor and co-publisher. “This should be a fun and informative afternoon at the carousel for people of all ages.”
The Friends of the Carousel, the volunteer group that restored this St. Catharines gem, will also be available to talk about their work.

Carousel fans and riders can pick up a free copy of Escarpment Views at the event. In the meantime, residents are invited to share their memories of the carousel on the Escarpment blog at www.EscarpmentViews.ca.
