Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak Brings Hydro Bill Relief for Niagara and Hamilton Families

Niagara At Large is posting this May 20 media release from the office of Ontario Conservative Leader Tim Hudak for your information and comment.

NEWS:

GRIMSBY—Today, Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak, MPP Niagara West-Glanbrook, said a PC government will provide relief for families by removing the provincial portion of the HST from home hydro and heating bills, and the debt retirement charge from the family hydro bill. Taken together, these steps will give Ontario households $275 in immediate relief from rising energy bills.

Dalton McGuinty’s expensive energy experiments – like his smart meter tax machines and sweetheart Samsung deal – have caused hydro bills to skyrocket. What’s worse, he has also burdened families by slapping the HST on essentials like hydro, home heating, and natural gas. Families are also still paying a debt retirement charge for a $7.8 billion debt that should have been paid off by now.

In October, the choice is clear – a McGuinty government which will raise the taxes of Ontario families, or a Tim Hudak government which will provide relief for families on hydro bills.

QUOTES:

“I have been hearing the same thing from families and seniors across Niagara and Hamilton.  Families are paying more and working harder, only to fall further behind.  Taxes, fees and hydro bills are skyrocketing, and families are worse off, not better.”

— Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak, MPP Niagara West-Glanbrook

“This October, the people of Ontario have a clear choice.  We can choose another Dalton McGuinty Liberal government that will keep hiking taxes and raising hydro rates, or we can choose a Tim Hudak PC government that gives families and seniors the relief and respect they deserve.”

— Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak, MPP Niagara West-Glanbrook

QUICK FACTS:

  • Under Dalton McGuinty, hydro rates have increased eight times since 2003 by a total of 84 percent, or a whopping 150 percent for families with activated smart meters.
  • Despite promising Ontario families that his expensive energy experiments and Green Energy Act would only raise rates by 1 percent, Dalton McGuinty now admits in last year’s Fall Economic Update that bills will rise by an additional 46 percent by 2015.
  • The Debt Retirement Charge was created in May 2002 as a dedicated revenue stream to pay off a residual stranded debt of $7.8 billion by 2012. The McGuinty Government first pushed back the repayment date from 2012 to 2014, and then until 2018, with no explanation why.

  1. Keep reminding us of the facts of the past !!! We need to really get into this next election and get more people out to vote. If each person (me included) made sure their own families got out to vote for the person of their choice after reading & realizing the power in numbers we have and the power for change & sensible government we have , our Southern Tier would definitely become what it once was …….. ” a comfortable, safe place to live!”

MR McGuinty’s legacy to Ontario will be that he alone drove the final nail in the coffin of affordable energy in Ontario and he did it by exporting much of the Ontario electric utility customers’ money to Samsung in Korea when it should have stayed here to help rebuild Ontario’s broken economy.

  3. Conservatives are anti-labour, pro “free” trade, anti-green, anti-positive change, anti-progress. They appeal to bottoms lines: greed., corporate welfare, duping the “masses”. Framing the contest as Liberal or Conservative is false. We have more coices: NDP and Green.

Where is the manufacturing? Where is the health care? Where is the state of progressive industries?

  4. The “ONLY” people who were a constant during the fight to save the ERs in Port Colborne and Fort Erie was Andrea Horwath and her associates. Craitor was usually there but shortly afterwards I watched a program where he was praising McGuinty and the EX Health Minister Smitherman (The one who helped eliminate the VON) in a fashion that did not instill my confidence. I once in front of the Douglas basically dared him to get off his ass and cross the floor to sit as an INDEPENDENT or with the NDP. He did not reply and is still sitting among the cause of our grief. By the way he was not “Present” for the vote on the HST according to feed back I got from the opposition..So do you honestly think this person has your welfare AT HEART …I’m sorry to say I DO NOT…You be your own judge

  6. The debt relief charge was put in place by the conservatives in May 2002 when Erie Eves was the premier, a conservative. It was put in place to make Ontario Hydro more appealing for investors towards privatization. The conservatives wanted to sell the assets of Ontario hydro but leave the debt with the taxpayers of Ontario. How is that for looking after the taxpayers Tim?
