A Memorial Day weekend morning on the U.S. side of the Peace Bridge. We used to come in droves. Now most of us are coming no more.

A Brief Forward Note from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – If Trump’s war against Canada has done at least one good thing, it has been to encourage us to stop crossing the Canada-U.S. border  to his country and discover more of our own.

Just this past weekend alone – a holiday weekend in the United States – and typically one that sees large line-ups of Canadians crossing the Peace Bridge to enter the U.S., the  U.S. side of the bridge was virtually empty of traffic.

Of course, for Americans who believe Trump’s nonsense that Canada is a hot bed for drug dealers and other criminals, a plunge in the number of Canadians crossing over to their country may very well be good news too.

Once upon a time, there was a neighbourhood in the City of Toronto called Yorkville that was –  before all of the  magic and kaleidoscope of  colours in  it were gentrified into oblivion –    one of the most alluring havens in Canada for aspiring young writers, painters, actors, musicians and bohemians of every stripe you could imagine.

Out of this cornucopia of creativity came something in the 1960s called “The Toronto Sound” that boomed from the amplifiers of groups with names like ‘Stitch In Tyme’, ‘The Ugly Ducklings’  and  The Paupers’ – groups that were just as talented as so many of their counterparts coming out of the United States at the time but did not make as large a splash on the music scene because they did not have the same access to what legendary Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell called the “star making machinery’ that included big record label distributors and radio stations that played to huge numbers of listeners. Fort Erie, ON—For National Public Works Week, the Town of Fort Erie is excited to announce that it won the PitcH20 competition. This new water innovation contest was held at the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative annual conference. With a focus on “The Future of Fresh Water,” the Town earned praise for its work against inflow and infiltration into wastewater systems.

The Town won PitcH20 for a pilot project that adds advanced technology called a Flexliner to the bottom of maintenance holes.  Flexliners create a watertight barrier to stop groundwater from getting in and wastewater from leaking out. Continue reading →

This May 24^th to 26^th is Memorial Day Weekend across the border in the U.S.A. and it is usually a weekend when the Peace Bridge and Rainbow Bridge crossings are packed with traffic heading to the Buffalo, Niagara Falls, N.Y. areas and beyond.

This year let’s stand together with growing numbers of our fellow Canadians in keeping those border crossings to the American side void of as much traffic as possible, just as they have been for much of the last four or five months since Trump began threatening our country’s economic welfare and sovereignty.

A sight that would seem unthinkable before Trump took office again this past January. Hardly a single car or truck crossing the border into the United States at the Peace Bridge on a Saturday morning earlier this May, at a time of the week when this bridge crossing usually it would be packed.

This May 23^rd, on a CBC radio program, several Canadians were asked if they have any plans to travel to the United States in the days, weeks or months ahead, and it was heartening to hear them – almost to a person – say absolutely not.

Not only is the Province introducing the patently undemocratic Bill 5 which will create lawless Special Economic Zones that can be applied to ANY land/area in the Province and will kill the Endangered Species Act, they are also doubling down on their highly controversial Ministerial Zoning Orders which the Auditor General has already produced a scathing report on.

With the so-called “Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act”, Bill 17 (tabled earlier this May), the province is looking to fast-track road, transit and housing construction by giving itself more control over municipal processes — in part by expanding controversial minister’s zoning orders and giving those powers to the infrastructure minister as well as the housing minister.

The Bill also prevents municipalities from requiring higher standards for design/energy efficiency of buildings than is currently prescribed in Ontario’s out-dated building code. Continue reading →

In these upside-down, inside-out Trumpian times we are living in, I’m not sure that words like “shocking,” “outrageous,” or “blasphemous” pack much of a punch any more.

For tens-of-millions of people south of the Canada-U.S. border and – I’m sorry to say – for more than a few north of it, “shocking,” “outrageous,” and “blasphemous” have become the new norm.

It wasn’t really all that long ago that if any political leader in a free and democratic country suggested even mildly that they were put there by divine right to serve God’s purpose, leaders of the opposition would spend days, if not weeks, verbally ripping them apart.

I know this probably isn’t going to go over so well with the people out there who are so afraid they will be robbed or worse that they go to bed at night with three two or three extra bolts locking their front and back doors, but I don’t believe it is so unsafe out there that we should let fear reign over good judgment and throw such large amounts of our regional tax dollars at policing.

I know we need a police service. Every community needs one for reasons I don’t think I need to explain here. And there is no denying we have some crime here. That is true of every region across the country.

We’re not living along the border between Russia and Ukraine here. Does Niagara’s Regional Police Service really need one of these at a cost of $300,000?

But why on earth, in a relatively safe region like Niagara, do we need a police force with an armed tank, with military-style assault weapons, and now, a helicopter, when we have enough problems down here on the ground that need addressing, like too many of our fellow citizens lining up at food banks, too many who are unable to afford a roof over their head or find a job with a livable wage, just to name a few. Fire Keepers Taylor Cronkwright, Lesroy Walcott, and Fred Bowering

St. CATHARINES, Ontario – Indigenous activists led by Ashley Cronkwright, Fred Bowering, Lesroy Walcott, and Brandi Johnson lit a Healing Fire at Richard Pierpoint Park in St. Catharines, Ontario to hold a safe space from the St. Catharines anti-encampment by-law for the unhoused.

The fire was held from 1-4pm on Sunday, May 18th, and will be held every Sunday onwards.

Indigenous activists served food and water to the unhoused at the fire and accepted clothing donations for children and adults. The Healing Fire space is also in memory of loved ones lost and in support of families and friends of loved ones lost to mental health, addictions, and homelessness, or living through it. Imagine going to work in a town or city where, by government decree, workers had no right to health and safety, a minimum wage, or employment protections, including the right to recourse when they were injured, fired or mistreated on the job.

That’s the reality bearing down on Ontarians once the Ford Conservatives’ Bill 5, Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, is made law.

Buried in Schedule 9 of this omnibus bill, now at second reading in the Ontario legislature, is the wide-ranging power to create “special economic zones” anywhere in the province. Within these zones, the provincial government can suspend or override all existing laws and regulations around labour conditions, health and safety, and environmental protections, as well as municipal regulations. Province keeping costs down for families in the face of tariffs and economic uncertainty

A Brief Forward Note from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – I trust  I wouldn’t be alone if I asked – Why not bring back the gas tax and use the money raised from it to support the growth of renewable energy projects across the province?

And how about using the gas tax as another incentive for getting more people out of their cars, not to mention all of  those gas-guzzling pickups, and using public transit?

Is the answer to those questions a  flat ‘NO’?  Apparently it is given this latest news from the premiere that comes at a time when he is repeatedly using Trump’s tariff war as cover for taking us backwards when it comes to any and all efforts to address the climate crisis and  protect what is left  of our natural heritage.

Now back to Premier Ford’s News Release

As part of its plan to protect Ontario, the government is continuing to lower costs for hard-working families, support local businesses and put more money back into people’s pockets through its plan to permanently cut the gasoline and fuel tax rates, which would save households, on average, about $115 per year going forward.

The government is also proposing to remove tolls from the provincially owned Highway 407 East, which is expected to save daily commuters an estimated $7,200 annually. Continue reading →

A Brief Foreword Note from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – This proposed legislation – branded by the Ford government as the “Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act” (Bill 17)  – appears to book-end Ford’s controversial Bill 5 in terms of what it may do to unleash low-density urban sprawl and road construction  over more of our natural heritage, including our food-growing lands and habitat for endangered wildlife. All in a developer’s paradise where there are fewer rules and regulations  and opportunities for public  scrutiny getting in the way.

Niagara At Large will have more news and commentary on this new bill and on Bill 5 in the days ahead.

BEAMSVILLE – This May 12^th, 2025, Ontario is introducing the Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act, 2025 (Bill 17), to help speed up the construction of new homes and infrastructure, including by streamlining development processes and reducing costs in close partnership with municipalities.

The province is also increasing its historic investment in housing-enabling infrastructure by adding $400 million in immediate funding to the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and Municipal Housing Infrastructure Fund for a total of nearly $2.3 billion over four years across the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Fund.

Long-serving St. Catharines City Councillor Joe Kushner is honoured for his service.

The City of St. Catharines celebrated its – and reportedly Canada’s – longest-serving municipal councillor on Saturday with a ribbon cutting at the new Joe Kushner Park.

Last July, St. Catharines City councillors passed a motion to rename Woodgale Park to Joe Kushner Park in recognition of what will be Kushner’s 50 years as a St. Andrew’s Councillor at the end of this Council term.

New signage was unveiled at the event on May 10. Two new signs mark Joe Kushner Park at 153 Glendale Ave., which has a soccer field, lit tennis courts and passive open space. Continue reading →

An Urgent Call to Action from the Canadian Environmental Law Association, a nation-wide, non-profit legal group fighting for environmental protection

Last month, the Ontario government introduced Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. CELA’s legal team has just completed its review of the bill, and we’re calling on the government to withdraw it.

This omnibus legislation would:

• * Suspend environmental laws in new “Special Economic Zones”, which the government is empowered to create.
• * Weaken mining and species-at-risk safeguards, prioritizing economic growth over ecological and public-health protections.
• * Exempt major projects from environmental environmental reviews, in particular the Dresen landfill and Eagle’s Next Mine.

This past May 8^th the  Ford Government announced it is rolling the dice on building four untested, first-of-their-kind nuclear reactors at the Darlington Nuclear Station.

It’s an expensive and risky roll. The government claims these four reactors will cost $20.9 billion and will take 10 years to build. A much more realistic cost estimate based on real-world experience says these reactors will cost at least $27 billion.

Of course, these American-designed reactors will also depend on  enriched uranium imports from the United States . So much for sending Donald Trump a message and protecting Canada’s national security. Continue reading →

Here is to all of the good mothers out there who carried us to this life and have done so much to nurture, to teach and to enrich our lives.

This Mother’s Day is a time to pay tribute to you and I also would like to share one song for the occasion.

It is called ‘Let It Be’ and then Beatle Paul McCartney said that he was inspired to write it after his mother Mary, who died when he was 14, came to him in a dream.

In that dream, he once said in an interview; “She was reassuring me, saying, ‘It’s going to be OK, just let it be.’ I felt so great. She gave me the positive words. I woke up and thought, ‘What was that? She said ‘Let It Be.’ That’s good.’ So I wrote the song ‘Let It Be’ out of positivity.”

It was 80 years ago today- May 8^th, 1945 – that the war against fascism in Europe – then  bomb ravaged, blood-soaked theatre of the Second World War – was finally declared over.

Now , when our freedoms and democracy are being threatened more than they have in decades , let’s remember all of those many thousands of young Canadians who fought and died to keep our freedoms and democracy alive in our  sovereign nation.

Niagara, Ontario – With U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent launch of official “Trump 2028” merchandise, Brock University experts point to historical and recent examples of leaders who have flouted or reinterpreted laws to justify staying in office beyond term limits.

Although the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibits a third term for any president, Associate Professor of Political Science Pascal Lupien says this will only present an obstacle if Trump cannot gain enough popular support.

So on May 4th of that year – exactly 55 years ago today – when I heard the news that four unarmed students were shot dead and several others were wounded by military clad National Guardsmen for protesting on the campus of Kent State University in Ohio against the War in Vietnam, I was shaken to the core as so many others, at that time, were. Earlier this Saturday (May 3^rd) afternoon, a friend and long-time reader and supporter of Niagara At Large, sent me a news story that is just now circulating about the highly offensive  AI generated image (shown just to the right and a line or two above these  words) that  Trump either posted himself or had posted for him on his online ‘Trump Social’ media site.

Pope Francis was a strong advocate for action on the climate crisis.

As I said here a few weeks ago upon learning of the death of Pope Francis, I am not a Catholic nor am I, in any real way, a church goer. But you don’t have to be either to hold in high regard the voice that Pope Frances raised on such issues as climate change war and peace, poverty, homelessness and migrants searching to find a new and better life – a voice that the likes of Trump, who had no business attending the Pope’s April 26th funeral, could never be.

A Brief Comment from Doug Draper At Niagara At Large – After all of federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s demonizing of the news media and vows to ‘defund’ the CBC, much in the way his political counterpart Donald Trump does with media south of the border, including his move to defund Public Radio and Television, what a refreshing change this is.

Prime Minister Carney’s stated support here for Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC, and his clear recognition of the important role free and independent news outlets play in a democracy bodes well for him.

It also lines up well iy with his pledge to defend and build a stronger Canada for all.

Doug Ford just introduced Bill 5 — and it’s nothing short of a direct attack on Ontario’s natural heritage and our communities.

Disguised as an “economic growth” plan, Bill 5 will let the government bypass the Greenbelt Act and steamroll environmental protections to fast track destructive projects like the York1 landfill, Highway 413, and the Highway 401 tunnel – without proper assessments.

Bill 5 puts our water, farmland, and wildlife at risk.

This May 1^st, 2025, the Ontario government moved to protecting communities by re-introducing legislation that would, if passed, strengthen municipal governance and accountability.

Ontario is proposing changes through the Municipal Accountability Act, 2025 that would enable the creation of a new, standardized municipal code of conduct, an integrity commissioner inquiry process that would be consistent throughout the province and mandatory code of conduct training for members of council and certain local boards.
