For At Least Some Canadians,  Federal NDP Now Seen As Best Choice To Beat Poilievre’s Conservatives – Poll

‘The NDP’s potential anti-Poilievre momentum is more than 50 per cent larger than the group open to following the Liberals to stop Poilievre’

A News Release from Data Shows, a professional, non-partisan data gathering venue based in Ontario, Canada

Posted September 10th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and his party could gain significant support in next federal election from voters who have had it with the Liberal’s Justin Trudeau and who want to stop Pierre Poilievre and his right-wing Conservatives from gaining power.

To stop Pierre Poilievre, 55 per cent of current Liberal, Green or Bloc supporters would “definitely” or “probably” swing their support to Jagmeet Singh’s NDP if they were best positioned, according to the most recent poll from Abacus Research.

The NDP’s potential swing group, which represents 17 per cent of the Canadian electorate, would boost the NDP within close range of the poll-leading Conservatives.

The NDP’s potential anti-Poilievre momentum is more than 50 per cent larger than the group open to following the Liberals to stop Poilievre. Only 11 per cent of Canadians drawn from current NDP, Green or Bloc supporters would definitely or probably vote Liberal to stop Poilievre. Continue reading

Canada Keeps Handing Public Money To Big Oil’s Favourite Greenwashing Schemes

‘The climate crisis impacts us all. The unnatural storms, fires, droughts and heatwaves across Canada this year will keep getting worse until we transition off of fossil fuels and the pollution they create.’

News from Environment Defence, a Canada-wide citizens group advocating for a cleaner, greener environment

Posted September 7th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

As the world continues to burn and countless billions of dollars of destruction is continuing to happen, almost all that Canada’s Justin Trudeau and his Liberals continue to do is use billions of dollars of our tax money to fund big oil and the tar sands.

A new report released by Oil Change International reveals that governments worldwide have already wasted over $40 billion on carbon capture and hydrogen projects. Just five countries account for 95 per cent of those billions – and Canada is third on the list.

Around 45 per cent of the $40 billion was spent on projects that are not even operational today. That’s why we say the money was wasted.

Even worse, these governments are gearing up to waste billions more – over $300 billion more!

More People Need To “Smarten Up” And Act Before We Lose What’s Left of Quality Public Health Care In Ontario

A Comment from Linda McKellar, a Niagara, Ontario resident and retired hospital nurse

Posted September 9th,2024 on Niagara At Large

For the people? It sure doesn’t look that way when you see what he is doing to health care and other public services people need.

I just can’t take Ford’s duplicity any longer.

People need to smarten up, educate themselves and act before our systems (not just health care) are run by oligarchs (rich political leaders with only their own interests paramount) and the average person suffers as a result.

Having worked in the health care system for over 40 years and retired for 15, the subtle but DEADLY changes in health care are both intentional and not for the benefit of anyone but, as (U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate) Bernie (Sanders) would say, the top one per cent and private insurance companies. The Ford Government’s Plan to Privatize Ontario’s Public Hospital Services

For 100 years, Ontario has built our system of local public hospitals that operate on a non-profit basis, in the public interest. Under the cover of the pandemic, the Ford government began to make plans to privatize Ontario’s public hospital services, including surgeries and diagnostics to private for-profit hospitals and clinics.

A Detailed Account of the Ford Government’s privatization plans prepared by the Ontario Health Coalition, a non-profit citizens group advocating for quality public health care for everyone across the province

Posted September 9th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

On January 16, 2023, Premier Doug Ford announced his plan to open new private for-profit day hospitals in three cities, expand other for-profit clinics and shunt tens of millions in public funding to private clinics and hospitals.

The premier said that 50% of the surgeries done in our public hospitals could be cut and privatized. This would devastate our vital public hospital services unless Ontarians stop the Ford government from privatizing them. Continue reading

Ontario Families Pay $1,000,000,000 to Doug Ford’s Buddies

A News Commentary from the Liberal Party of Ontario

Posted September 6th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie

TORONTO, ONTARIO — Today, Doug Ford locked in his $1,000,000,000 government hand-out to multinational brewers, big grocers, and international convenience store chains.

“There is no reason for the cost of convenience to be $1 billion. Doug Ford’s buddies have made a killing off his latest giveaway at the expense of Ontario families.” — Bonnie Crombie, Leader of Ontario’s Liberals

Ontario’s agreement with the multinational brewers was set to expire in just a short few months, at which point alcohol could have been made available in corner stores for free, without taxpayers paying $1 billion to wealthy corporations and Conservative insiders. Continue reading

A Sad Farewell To One of the Most Passionate Environmentalists, Urban Planners & Teachers In Our Niagara In Recent Times

A Brief & Personal Tribute from Doug Draper, Niagara At Large

Patrick Robson, a model public servant and teacher who cared passionately about the community

I have been writing so many tributes lately to significant others who have passed in our region of Niagara that it should be getting easier.

But it is never gets easier. It is hard and this one is going to be hard too.

It is especially hard this time because I am still recovering from the shock I felt after hearing the news more than a week ago from a mutual friend and admirer of Patrick Robson – a good person and a model public servant who made a daily practice of putting the interests of the public in our communities across Niagara first, and a passionate teacher who inspired so many students during his all-to-short time  as a teacher in the Environmental Management Program at Niagara College – had died so suddenly this past August 25th at age of 62. This Is What Putting The Public Interest Ahead of Self Interest Looks Like

Politicians on Both Sides of the Canada/U.S. Border Should Take Note

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Posted September 5th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Liz Cheney on the cover of her recent, best-selling book ‘Oath and Honour – A Memoir and a Warning’

I never thought a time would come when I would count Liz Cheney – a former U.S. Republican and very conservative Congresswoman and daughter of former Vice President Dick (a.k.a. Darth Vader) Cheney – as one of my heroes.

But her willingness to put country and the interests of its people above more narrow partisan and self interests – in her case to speak out forcefully against the tyranny of Donald Trump, knowing she would lose her Congressional seat and receive death threats from Trump’s most zealous supporters – and her work as co-chair of a Congressional Committee uncovering the facts behind Trump’s January 6th, 2021 attempted insurrection, makes her a profile in courage and heroism in my books.

In her recent book, ‘Liz Cheney Oath and Honour- A Memoir and a Warning’, she writes this in the prologue;  “Elected officials who believe their own political survival is more important than anything else threaten the survival of our republic, no matter what they tell themselves to justify their cowardice.”

Then this past August 4th 2024, at Duke University in North Carolina, she had this to say in front of a large audience that listened, then gave her a rousing round of applause and a standing ovation.

A Happy Labour Day To All With One Additional Thought In Mind

Labour Day Would Be Even Happier If Every Worker Made A Living Wage

A Brief Message from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large

Posted on Labour Day, September 2nd, 2024

It has often been said  in both Canada and the United States that it is working people who have built and who continue to build our communities and countries, and I believe that to be true.

Without health care workers, grocery store workers, construction workers and so many others labouring on the front line through good times and bad times (including pandemics), the corporate barons and their shareholders would not be racking in the record amount of Do-Re-Mi s0 many of them are drowning in today.

Yet we continue to see employees at grocery store chains working for wages that are not keeping up with the cost of living while the owners of those chains have been making obscene amounts of money selling food many in our communities are struggling to pay for. Continue reading

Is The End of Summer Really Here? No, No, No!

Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach

Every year at this time, as we come up to the last five or so days before Labour Day, you hear the same line over and over again,  coming from radio and television hosts and from many of the people you cross paths with in the community.

The line goes like this; “It’s the end of summer,” and I hear it   used in the context of everything from ‘taking one last walk on the beach’, to ‘having one last outdoor picnic or barbecue before putting the lawn chairs away’ and rushing around for last-minute supplies for ‘back to school’. In A Climate Emergency, Why Is Gas So Large A Part Of The Ford Government’s Plan For Ontario’s Energy Future?

“Rather than building new gas plants and expanding existing facilities, Ontario needs to plan for the future and invest in affordable clean energy solutions which will reduce the province’s emissions and make electricity more affordable for people.”

A Statement from Keith Brooks, Programs Director, Environmental Defence

Posted August 29th on Niagara At Large

Toronto – This August 28th’s announcement by Energy Minister Stephen Lecce is a significant and shocking reversal on electricity planning in Ontario.

By opening the LT2 procurement to natural gas, Minister Lecce is walking back the terms of the original procurement, which focused on 2000 MW of electricity generation from wind, solar and biomass.

Gas is a fossil fuel, and most of the gas used in Ontario is fracked. When we consider the full climate impacts of gas, including extraction, using gas to generate electricity is no better than using coal.

The headwaters of Twelve Mile Creek, located in Fonthill within the Town of Pelham, supply cold groundwater that is crucial for native Brook Trout, a species that thrives in cool, clean water. However, urbanization and erosion have threatened their habitat.

The steep gradient of the creek’s channel has caused significant erosion, deepening the channel by more than four metres in some areas and sending harmful sediment downstream. Continue reading

When It Comes To The Greenbelt, “The Truth Will Come Out”

“Doug Ford and his government bent the rules to benefit a wealthy few when he moved to carve up the Greenbelt – and now he’s under criminal investigation for it.” – Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles

A News Release from the Office of Ontario NDP Official Opposition Leader Marit Stiles

Posted August 15th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

QUEEN’S PARK—Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles is calling on Premier Doug Ford to come clean about his role in the Greenbelt scandal as the RCMP investigation continues and key Conservative staffers face questioning.

“Doug Ford and his government bent the rules to benefit a wealthy few when he moved to carve up the Greenbelt – and now he’s under criminal investigation for it.

But Ford doesn’t have to wait for the RCMP probe to be complete – he can and should come clean now about his role in this scheme:

  • When exactly did the Premier first know about the plans to remove land from the Greenbelt?
  • Who directed staff to illegally delete emails related to the Greenbelt?
  • Who ordered code words to be used to evade Freedom of Information requests?
  • Why won’t the Premier release his personal phone records related to this case?

People deserve so much better. Because on the Greenbelt, just like the Liberals’ Gas Plants, the truth will come out.”

Remembering Three Epic Days of Peace & Music

The Now Legendary Woodstock Festival Took Place on a Farm in New York States 55 Years Ago this August 15th, 16th and 17th

By Niagara At Large reporter and publisher Doug Draper

Posted August 15th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

It was August 1969 and my brother and I were walking to a record store in downtown St. Catharines and in the window we saw this colourful poster featuring a white dove perched on the arm of a guitar.

The poster read; “Woodstock Music & Art Festival” and listed some of the best of the best performers of the time who would play there – Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Who, Santana, Jefferson Airplane and Sly & The Family Stone, just to name a few.

Tickets for what the poster promised to be this “Three Days of Peace & Music” in a place called White Lake in the Catskills of New York were – believe it or not – $6.50 a day or $18.00 for all three days. (Compare that to tickets ranging above $1,000 to see Taylor Swift in concert today.) Continue reading

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaking to cheering crowds at one of her recent rallies

Kamala Harris’s youthful energy, the size of her campaign crowds and the rock-star excitement she is drawing from them, her rise in the polls and the amount of money donors of all ages are contributing to her presidential campaign is adding up to one thing.

According to many recent news reports in the United States, including a detailed August 11th New York Times report based on sources inside his campaign and headlined; “Trump’s Circle Sees Him Lose Grip of His Bid,”  it is all has Trump on the verge of exploding.

Just like this –

And if Trump does explode, let’s hope he doesn’t take his country and other regions around the world, including Canada, with him.

As for Kamala, you just keep on keeping on.

For the sake of all of us, you have got to win!

RCMP Interviews Possible Players/Witnesses in Doug Ford Greenbelt Scandal

But Can We Count On The Mounties to Get to the Bottom of this Affair?

A News Commentary by Doug Draper followed by a Statements from Ontario’s NDP and Liberal Party Leaders

One of many Niagara citizens who joined countless thousands of residents across Ontario over the past years to stop the Ford government’s scheme to give away pieces of our Greenbelt to Premier Doug Ford’s friends in the development industry.  File photo by Doug Draper

The recent news that Canada’s Mounties (RCMP) are actively interviewing individuals over the Greenbelt scandal surrounding Ontario’s Ford government is no doubt receiving applause from residents across Niagara and the other regions of the province who are opposed to seeing any more pieces of these precious green lands paved over for sprawling development.

I wish I could applaud to that news too, but I can’t. And here is why.

First, I have little faith in the RCMP getting to the bottom of who was involved in this scandal, let alone making any charges it may dish out stick.

From the 1985 Air India bombing where a bomb planted all on Canadian soil killed all 329 people aboard a commercial jet flying over the Atlantic Ocean, to a long list of white collar wrongdoing committed across this country, the Mounties, unlike their FBI counterparts in the United States, have had a pretty poor record of ‘getting their man’.

I can’t count the number of times that individuals or corporations committing the same offences in Canada that they were south of the border were charged and convicted in the United States before any charges were slapped on them here, if they were ever charged here at all. Continue reading

Latest Thorold Grocery Food Giveaway Draws Record Numbers In Need

Where Are Our Senior Leves Of Government In Addressing The Growing Wealth Gap And In Making The Cost Of Living More Affordable For People In This Country?

A News Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Thorold City Councillors Henry D’Angela (left) and Carmen DeRose stand at the back on a now-empty transport truck following a grocery food giveaway this past Saturday, all paid for by an anonymous donor in the community.

A Thorold area businessman known to many only as “the anonymous donor” has done it again.

For the fifth time in the Thorold, Niagara area this year alone, an individual who chooses to remain unknown for his charitable acts, has reached into his own pocket to cover the cost of a grocery food drive for area residents who find themselves struggling to get by.

This past Saturday (August 3rd) turned out be the biggest food giveaway of its kind yet, Carmen DeRose, a Thorold City Councillor who has volunteered his time distributing the food on the frontlines.

Somewhere between about 400 and 500 cars lined up for blocks with people waiting to enter a the Holy Rosary Hall parking lot off Sullivan Avenue where the food was being distributed, DeRose told Niagara At Large as this past Saturday’s food drive drew to a close. Continue reading

Roadside Zoos – How & Why Are We Still Doing This In Ontario?

A Message and a Call-Out To All of  Us from the Green Party of Ontario

Posted August 6th, 2024 on Niagara At Large

Today in not-so-fun-facts: In Ontario, you don’t need any sort of license to operate a private zoo. If you have the money you can purchase a lion, tiger or camel, and charge visitors to come and see it – living conditions be damned.

If you got our recent news about penned dog hunting (find out more about that by clicking on – https://gpo.ca/issues/dog-hunting/ ) it should be no surprise that Ford allows Ontario’s animals to be treated this way.

Without any regulations or licencing, Ontario’s roadside zoos allow exotic animals to be kept in tiny cages without proper enrichment; with insufficient protection from cold and heat, and complete disregard for animals’ complex social needs – the list goes on and on. Continue reading

James Baldwin – December 1st, 1924 to August  2nd, 2024

A Few Words from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large

James Baldwin, on the cover of Time Magazine in May, 1963Thirty-seven years after American-born James Baldwin’s death in 1987, his books and so much of what he had to say about racial and social justice remain as relevant and as well read today.

One of James Baldwin’s lines, written in 1963, that often comes to mind for this reporter and commentary in this age of climate crisis reads as follows –

“God Gave Noah The Rainbow Sign, No More Water, The Fire Next Time.”

Tragically, enough of us chose not the head the warning.

Forests and communities ravaged in unprecedented numbers of wildfires across Canada.

P.S. If you have never watched it, try to pick up or download a copy of the 1916 Academy Award-nominated film ‘I Am Not Your Negro’ – a penetrating look at James Baldwin’s life and times, and some the civil rights leaders he marched shoulder to shoulder with..

Farewell to Brock University’s Longest Serving President – Alan Earp

A Brief Tribute from Niagara At Large reporter/publisher and former Brock student Doug Draper

Posted July 31st. 2024 on Niagara At Large

Alan Earp, how many would remember him when he was President of Brock University

Once upon a time, before universities and colleges across the country became big businesses, and before students were more commonly regarded as BIUs (‘Basic Income Units) who saw tuition fees soar and ridiculously high user fees imposed on them for almost ever campus service, including  parking their cars, Alan Earp was president of Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Alan Earp, a Second World War veteran who became president of Brock in 1973 and who remains the longest serving president in the university’s history, serving in the job for 15 years, died this past July 7th at age 99.

The president of Brock before it became the mega-institution that it is today, Alan Earp presided over a university still small enough in size and student population to give students, myself among them, a good deal of direct access to well-qualified professors in a host of fields that their counterparts could only dream of having  at larger universities at the time. Kamala Harris Raises High Hopes – For The First Time In A long Time – Across the Border

“Finally, we have a chance of getting rid of Trump once and for all,” one Buffalo, N.Y. resident told this visitor from the Canadian side.

A Brief Commentary by Doug Draper

What a big difference a week can make.

How do you say hope in America and in Canada and other parts of the world these days? In  two words – KAMALA HARRIS.

My wife Mary and I are frequent travellers to the Buffalo, N.Y. and we have a number of American friends further off that we communicate with by phone who have been feeling pretty depressed and concerned over the past year or so.

They have been worried sick that Donald Trump might become President again and take a match and can or gasoline to what has made their country, with all its faults, a beacon for democracy and freedom over the past almost 250 years.

Then last week, U.S. President Joe Biden, realizing that what comes with advanced age was dragging him and his future in politics down, decided to put country first and not run for another term of office. At the same time, he endorsed him Vice-President, Kamala Harris, and since they support for her has been pouring in from all over the country. Continue reading

Ford Government Slammed For Pursuing ‘Costly, High-Risk’ Electricity Generating Optons

Ontario Premier and Doug Ford and his Conservatives have left us lagging behind other regions of the world on turning to safer, green sources of energy

Premier Doug Ford loves to talk about saving Ontarian’s money. But the money the average Ontarian saves on things like licence plate stickers is chump change compared to the costs being piled onto our electricity system by the government’s high-cost choices.

Premier Ford’s enthusiastic support for high-risk, high-cost nuclear projects is a perfect example. Continue reading

Members of Niagara’s Palestinian Community Continues to Accuse Region of Having a Double Standard

A News Commentary by  Doug Draper, editor/publisher of Niagara At Large

Niagara’s Regional Headquarters in Thorold

It all started in October of last year when Niagara Region’s Chair Jim Bradley and/or regional representatives around him decided to raise the flag of Israel and light regional headquarters  in the blue and white colours of that flag.

It was  show of support for Israel following an attack on Israel by Hamas terrorists who butchered more than 1,000 Israeli citizens and took a few hundred more hostage last October 7th,

At the time, no one appeared to raise any issues about the move with this gesture of support. But by January of this year, after thousands of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza strip, many of them children, were killed by bombs Israeli’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition were dropping in retaliation, a coalition of Niagara residents of Palestinian descent believed it was time for the Region to raise the Palestinian flag and cast its colours on the headquarters too. An Invited to All from the Organizers of GardenWalk Buffalo

A Brief Foreword from Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – For all of you who have never really visited the heart of Buffalo – who may have just driven on the beltway to get to the  airport or to the Walden Galleria mall or  the state thruway and have only been exposed  to  abandoned and broken down mills and warehouses and housing that has fallen into ruin along the way –  GardenWalk Buffalo will take you to neigbourhoods where the architecture and tree-lined streetscape  rivals any town or city on the continent.

This event is an opportunity to experience the tremendous sense of community and pride people  living in those neighbourhoods have – a sense of community and pride I wish we had more of on the the Canadian side of the Niagara River.

I have never crossed paths with a fellow Canadian who has crossed the border for this great and free-of-charge summer event that hasn’t felt the same way. Continue reading

“This is great news for commuters in Niagara who need to drive into Toronto regularly,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.

“This is part of our government’s mandate to move people and goods safely and efficiently across Ontario to improve quality of life and support a globally competitive economy.” Continue reading
