Toronto — This past December 12th, 2024, the Alliance for a Liveable Ontario (ALO), a coalition of farmers, environmentalists, housing activists, land use planners, health care providers and community groups, urged the four political party leaders to endorse decisive, immediate action to address the housing crisis.
This comes a few weeks after the ALO released a report card evaluating provincial housing actions.
Former Toronto, Ontario Mayor and a founding member of Alliance for a Liveable Ontario, David Crombie
“Ontarians already know that the Province’s housing actions so far have made the housing crisis worse,” said David Crombie, former Mayor of Toronto and a founder of the ALO. “Today we’re showing political party leaders what they need to do to fix things. People need homes they can afford, now.”

A Tribute To One Of The Great Ones – Dick Van Dyke
A Brief One from Doug Draper

A young Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore wen they starred in the hit 1960s sitom ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’
If you don’t mind indulging me on this one while I try to lighten things up a little bit, a friend from Massachusetts recently shared a short segment of a recent appearance by the legendary, all-round actor, entertainer and comedian Dick Van Dyke on the late-night show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’, just a week before his 99th birthday.
You might remember Dick Van Dyke from all of those re-runs, and they still air them, of the big hit 1960s sitcom ‘The Dick Van Dyke’ show, which also featured the late great Mary Tyler Moore, or from his lead role, across from Julie Andrews, as the chimney sweep in the Academy Award-winning movie Mary Poppins.Continue reading →

A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper
Posted December 12th, 2024 on Niagara At Large
As almost anyone with an open, rational mind already knows, Donald Trump lies as often with as much ease as most of the rest of us breathe air.
But the orange-face clown monster was honest with us way back when in 2016, when he ran and won the race for U.S. president the first time when said one thing; “I can stand out on Fifth Avenue (in downtown Manhattan) in broad daylight and shoot someone and get away with it,” he boasted.
Well here we are eight years later, after a whole posse of state and federal prosecutors were after him on charges that could land him in jail for years and now, with those criminal cases virtually melting away, he is on his way back to the White House again.
This morning of December 12th, just as I was beginning to cope with all of the grief and anger that enveloped me after the results of this past November’s U.S. presidential election came in, I woke up to the news that Trump was back on the cover of a soon-to-be-circulated Time Magazine as 2024’s man of the year.
To compound the horror of that, American cable news channels were showing clips of him, grinning like the Grinch who stole Christmas, with members of his family and associates, ringing the opening for the opening of the New York Stock Exchange while traders and hedge fund operators on on the floor of the Exchange, were chanting “U.S.A., U.S.A. with dreams of more tax cuts for the rich and super-rich dancing in their heads.
I wish I could say that I am sorry to inflict this on you, dear readers, but since misery often begs for company, I am including a video clip of Trump and company at the Stock Exchange for your entertainment. You might not want to view it on a full stomach but you can watch it by clicking on the screen immediately below –
One thing I don’t want to hear from anyone on the American side of the Canada/U.S. border any more is; “Everyone is equal under the law.”
At long last and at the very least, spare us from that one.

Carlos Garcia
When I opened my inbox in the late afternoon of this past Monday, November 9th to an email with the heading; ‘City of St. Catharines Pays Tribute to Councillor N. Carlos Garcia’ I froze for a few seconds before saying; “Oh no. Don’t tell me what I think I am about to read. I can’t believe it.”
I would not be surprised if many others who received this news reacted the same way.
With the sudden, untimely passing of Carlos Garcia, a professional urban planner and (alongside his good friend and fellow council colleague Bruce Williamson) a representative on St. Catharines council for Port Dalhousie (Ward 6), his city and all of Niagara have lost a very wise and caring voice for growing our communities in ways that are people-friendly and affordable, and that protect and preserve their history and character.
Words like “passionate” and “principled” may seem overused at times, but Carlos was the living definition of what those words mean when it came to his efforts to protect and preserve our man-made and natural heritage in this region.Continue reading →

In that same commentary, I also sent out a message to any to my fellow citizens who read news outlets like this that acting on that anger with ugly language, including threats of violence, or with vandalism or worse, is not the answer in a civil, democratic society we should all strive to protect and preserve in a country like Canada.Continue reading →

Ontario NDP Leader, Demands The Premier Remove Kinga Surma As Minister Of Infrastructure.
A Statement from Marit Stiles, Ontario NDP Official Opposition Leader

Ontario Place, along the Lake Ontario shoreline in Toronto was once truly viewed by millions of visitors to it as a peoples’ place – public commons for all to spend the day and enjoy. Now thanks to Ford and his masters in the development industry, pieces of it are being turned into a parking lot, a private spa and what is next for what is left? And yes Ford is using billions of dollars of our tax money, and counting, to pay for this vandalism of this great public place.
“After wasting billions of taxpayer dollars subsidizing a luxury spa on Toronto’s waterfront, and tipping the scales with an unfair procurement process, the (Ontario Ford government) Minister responsible is missing in action.
“Minister Surma has repeatedly refused to take responsibility for the mess that her Ministry has made, but enough is enough. She needs to resign. And if she won’t, the Premier (Doug Ford) needs to take responsibility, do the right thing, and fire his Infrastructure Minister.”

So you say you want another tax cut?
I do too, but not the way our senior levels of government – Liberal, Conservative and for one term in Ontario, the NDP – have been doing it for the past 30 or more years where the most generous cuts have gone to the rich and super-rich while the rest of see ours cut just a wee little bit.
And so it went, election after election, with one government after another promising more tax cuts until the progressive income tax system that worked so well for working and middle class people decades after the Second World War, where those who made more paid proportionally more, gave way to user fees that were slapped evenly on everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.Continue reading →

The past few years have also seen more than the usual number of outbursts from members of the public attending municipal council meetings in Niagara and elsewhere.

An October 2016 cover of a New York City tabloid newspaper, Trump’s old home town. Didn’t matter what he said on that Access Hollywood tape. Tens-of-millions of Americans, including women and Evangelicals Christians voted for him to be their President anyway.
“Yeah, that’s her with the gold,” says then, first-time U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump as he is about to cross paths with young woman. “I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful (women) — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. … Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.” – from that infamous Access Hollywood tape, recorded in 2005 and released by some anonymous source just one month before the 2016 U.S. presidential election which Trump won.
Weren’t these words something to behold, especially coming out of the mouth of a future President of the United States.
In its choice of Presidents, America has gone from the soaring eloquence of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “you have nothing to fear but fear itself” and John F. Kennedy’s “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” to the likes of misogynistic garbage.
How far can you sink? It’s almost enough to have you joining the anti-science wing of Trump’s MAGA cult and throwing out Darwin’s whole theory of evolution.
There was a time when the surfacing of anything remotely close to trash talk like this, coming from the mouth of someone seeking high office, would blow up a political career.Continue reading →

Our government can’t set prices at the checkout, but we can give Canadians more money in their pocket – to help them afford the things they need and save for the things they want.
Starting December 14, 2024, we’re giving a tax break to all Canadians. With a GST/HST exemption across the country, Canadians will be able to buy essentials like groceries, snacks, and kids clothing – all tax-free.Continue reading →

How Much Will Darlington’s New Nuclear Reactors Cost?

Ontario Premier Doug Ford seems to have no problem spending our tax money as if there was an endless supply.
A Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper – Funny things when politicians are spending someone else’s money – meaning ours. Many of them, to use that old cliché, have a habit of spending it like drunken sailors.
One of the interesting things that too many voters either don’t seem to be aware of or don’t care to give enough consideration to is that politicians on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border who are on the conservative side of the ledger and who parade themselves as being better financial managers, have a long record of spending us into as much debt and often even more than their liberal counterparts.
That brings me to the Ford government in Ontario that, as of last year, has racked the net debt fof the province up to a stunning amount of more than $400 billion. – leaving even the highly conservative Canadian think tank, The Fraser Institute, calling Ford’s spending habits so “irresponsible,” that if they continue, they will leave Ontario residents facing some of the highest income tax rates in North America.Continue reading →

‘By peddling falsehoods about bike lanes, the Ontario government seeks to distract Ontarians from provisions in Bill 212 that will fast-track an unnecessary and expensive highway while undermining the Greenbelt.’ from a Statement by Environmental Defence
A Statement by Tim Gray, Executive Director, Environmental Defence Canada with a Brief Foreword by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large

A Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper – As part of what seems to a relentless, never-ending effort to – as Ontario Premier Doug Ford put it some years ago – take out “chunks” of province’s precious Greenbelt lands for development, Ford and his Conservatives try one move after another to accomplish that goal.
Even while the RCMP continues with a criminal investigation against alleged wrongdoings involving an earlier plan to gut Greenbelt lands, this premier and his minions are determined to pave over Greenbelt lands that make up some of the best natural heritage and food-growing lands in Canada anyway.Continue reading →

Sign A Petition To Urge The Province and Local Municipalities Not To Use Forceful Means To Tear Apart Encampments for the Homeless
‘The Niagara Poverty Reduction Network does not support the use of the notwithstanding clause to dismantle encampments by force; as was suggested by Premier Ford and recently supported by Niagara Falls, Welland, and St. Catharines mayors. Using police force and the threat of jail to clear encampments is neither compassionate nor effective.”
A Call-Out To All of Us from the Niagara Poverty Reduction Network

As the gap between the haves and the have-nots grows, so do the number of homeless camps across Niagara and the rest of Ontario
Niagara, Ontario – The Niagara Poverty Reduction Network (NPRN) supports the position of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness on the use of force and threat of criminalization to clear encampments. As a network we encourage everyone to sign this petition and share it through your social channels.
Across Ontario, the rising cost of living and unaffordable housing have forced more people into homelessness, with many resorting to encampments in public spaces. But tents in parks are not the answer—everyone deserves a safe and stable home.Continue reading →

Remembrance Day Ceremonies Have A Way Of Bringing People Together In A Warm, Positive Sort of Way

Wetland loss has already exceeded 72 percent in southern Ontario, and losses are ongoing. To make matters worse, changes to Ontario’s planning policy and legislation over the past several years have undermined wetland protection across the province, accelerating wetland loss.Continue reading →

Let’s Stand Together Against All Threats To Democracy, Foreign Or Domestic
A Brief Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper

Canadian troops landing in Normandy, France in June of 1944 in the war against Hitler’s Nazis
Almost every Second World War veteran I knew as a fellow worker, as a friend or interviewed for Remembrance Day stories for newspapers I worked for are gone now.
For years now, I haven’t met a single one from that war selling poppies and pinning them ever so carefully and with so much pride on peoples’ lapels as they once did outside of stores in our communities.
All I have left are memories of the horrific stories they told about comrades being blown to pieces during what was a do-or-die war for freedom over fascism.
The iconic soldiers’ memorial near in my childhood home, in Chippawa, Park in Welland, Ontario, bearing the names of young people from the community who fought and died in World Wars One and Two. file photo by Doug Draper
Today, we find ourselves fighting for those democratic rights and freedoms again and we all need to summon the courage to make sure that no one, foreign or domestic, uses whatever stealth means to take those freedoms away.
We need to stand together and remain vigilant in that fight. Wearing a poppy for a few weeks each year is not enough and may even serve as a shield for some who are working against our democratic values.

What a difference an election can make.
It was just a few weekends ago, when my wife and I crossed the border for a short trip to Buffalo, that people we talked to in the Elmwood Village area of that city were still feeling hopeful that Kamala Harris would win the presidency in their country and that they would see the back of Trump, once and for all.
In that area of the city, which has had a long history of voting for Democrats, Harris campaign signs were visibly present on front lawns and a local book store continued to sell out of ‘Kamala For President’ buttons and bumper stickers as quickly as they could get them.
This weekend of November 9th however, on another trip to the same area of Buffalo, just days after U.S elections that saw Trump win a second term as president, people we met at the coffee shops, at the farmers market and some estate sales we attended sounded pretty down when the top of the election came up.Continue reading →

(A Brief Foreword by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug draper – This past November 7th, I sat down in front of my laptop at home and tuned into the budget meeting underway at Niagara Regional Headquarters where once again, and for the third year in a row, it is looking like people across the region could be slapped with a hike on the regional government side of their property tax bill that is well above the rate of inflation.
And once again, as I forced myself to watch another one of these meetings, the Regional Council left me, as I know it leaves others I’ve talked to in the community, with a feeling n that this is a club, and we, the people, are not any part of it.

(A Brief Foreword by Doug Draper at Niagara At Large – In my decades-long experience covering environmental issues for news media outlets, it has almost always been the case that politicians on the right-wing or conservative side of the equation are in favour of weakening or eliminating measures aimed at protecting the environment.
It has also almost always been the case that they view any strengthening of environmental protection measures as being to costly while, at the same time, paying little or no attention to how costly taking little or no action to protect the environment can be – even at this time of climate emergencies when experts in insurance and other industries and agencies calculate that the cost of damage and destruction from floods, wildfires and other severe weather-related events is now adding up to countless tens-of-billions of dollars a year on this continent alone.Continue reading →
