A News Release from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance
Posted May 12th, 2025 on Niagara At Large
This past May 8th the Ford Government announced it is rolling the dice on building four untested, first-of-their-kind nuclear reactors at the Darlington Nuclear Station.
It’s an expensive and risky roll. The government claims these four reactors will cost $20.9 billion and will take 10 years to build. A much more realistic cost estimate based on real-world experience says these reactors will cost at least $27 billion.
Of course, these American-designed reactors will also depend on enriched uranium imports from the United States . So much for sending Donald Trump a message and protecting Canada’s national security. Continue reading

A Brief Mother’s Day Message from Doug Draper
Posted on Mother’s Day, May 11th, 2025 on Niagara At Large
Here is to all of the good mothers out there who carried us to this life and have done so much to nurture, to teach and to enrich our lives.
This Mother’s Day is a time to pay tribute to you and I also would like to share one song for the occasion.
It is called ‘Let It Be’ and then Beatle Paul McCartney said that he was inspired to write it after his mother Mary, who died when he was 14, came to him in a dream.
In that dream, he once said in an interview; “She was reassuring me, saying, ‘It’s going to be OK, just let it be.’ I felt so great. She gave me the positive words. I woke up and thought, ‘What was that? She said ‘Let It Be.’ That’s good.’ So I wrote the song ‘Let It Be’ out of positivity.”

It was 80 years ago today- May 8th, 1945 – that the war against fascism in Europe – then bomb ravaged, blood-soaked theatre of the Second World War – was finally declared over.
Now , when our freedoms and democracy are being threatened more than they have in decades , let’s remember all of those many thousands of young Canadians who fought and died to keep our freedoms and democracy alive in our sovereign nation.
In thonour of them, let’s continue to stand together against the threats to our quality of life and to our sovereignty being aimed at us by a United States that, before Trump, used to be one of our closest friends and allies.

Niagara, Ontario – With U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent launch of official “Trump 2028” merchandise, Brock University experts point to historical and recent examples of leaders who have flouted or reinterpreted laws to justify staying in office beyond term limits.
Although the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibits a third term for any president, Associate Professor of Political Science Pascal Lupien says this will only present an obstacle if Trump cannot gain enough popular support.
“In Latin America, nearly every country enshrines term limits in their constitutions, but it’s quite common for presidents to remain in office despite these provisions,” he says. Continue reading

In the spring of 1970, I was still a young, idealistic high school kid who believed, as I still do, that raising your voice in protest for good reasons can open paths to a better world.

Earlier this Saturday (May 3rd) afternoon, a friend and long-time reader and supporter of Niagara At Large, sent me a news story that is just now circulating about the highly offensive AI generated image (shown just to the right and a line or two above these words) that Trump either posted himself or had posted for him on his online ‘Trump Social’ media site.
Pope Francis was a strong advocate for action on the climate crisis.
As I said here a few weeks ago upon learning of the death of Pope Francis, I am not a Catholic nor am I, in any real way, a church goer. But you don’t have to be either to hold in high regard the voice that Pope Frances raised on such issues as climate change war and peace, poverty, homelessness and migrants searching to find a new and better life – a voice that the likes of Trump, who had no business attending the Pope’s April 26th funeral, could never be.

A strong, independent, and free press both defines and defends our values. My new government will protect reliable Canadian public forums, so we can tell our own stories in our own languages.

Prime Minister Mark Carney during a recent scrum with members of the news media and unlike Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, always making generous time for questions
“Central to this work is strengthening our public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, which has stitched this nation together, reporting from Corner Brook to Trois-Rivières to Whitehorse to Comox, bringing Canadians together at critical moments. My new government will also protect and fund more local news, including those with Indigenous perspectives.
“In a sea of foreign media and disinformation, we need Canadian voices more than ever.”

A Brief Comment from Doug Draper At Niagara At Large – After all of federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s demonizing of the news media and vows to ‘defund’ the CBC, much in the way his political counterpart Donald Trump does with media south of the border, including his move to defund Public Radio and Television, what a refreshing change this is.
Prime Minister Carney’s stated support here for Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC, and his clear recognition of the important role free and independent news outlets play in a democracy bodes well for him.
It also lines up well iy with his pledge to defend and build a stronger Canada for all.

Chesley Sullenberger- more famously known as ‘Sully’ – was the commercial airline pilot who in 2009, when the engines on his jet suddenly cut out, did not panic, but was able to remain cool-headed while using all of the skills he had to glide that huge plane to a landing on the choppy waters of the Hudson River and assist all 155 passengers and crew members aboard out of the sinking plane and onto waiting rescue boats alive. Trump keeps threatening to take over Canada.
On the eve of our April 28th federal election here in Canada, Trump took advantage of a news scrum at the White House to threaten our sovereignty again with more talk about making Canada “a 51st state.”
It another reminder that the United States can no longer be included among Canada’s good allies and friends. Continue reading

An Election Message fromNew Democratic Party of Canada Leader Jagmeet Singh
Posted April 24th, 2025 on Niagara At Large

New Democratic Party of Canada Leader Jagmeet Singh
Standing with workers in Winnipeg, Singh warned that Trump’s “America First” approach could place pressure on Canada to roll back core protections and exploit public resources.
“We’ve seen what happens when trade deals are made in secret,” said Singh. “Canadians end up paying the price. Our water, our health care, and our rights are not for sale—and no government has the right to trade them away.”
“Canadians deserve to know what’s being negotiated—and who benefits,” said Singh. “The days of secret trade-offs and backroom deals must end.”
Singh said the best defence against Trump is building real resilience at home—by expanding public power, lowering costs, and creating good jobs so working people aren’t left carrying the weight.
His plan centres on a stronger East-West energy grid, using Manitoba’s clean power to strengthen the Prairies, connect the North, and build an economy we control—together.
Singh closed with a message to voters: “If we want to protect what makes Canada, Canada—we need to stop trading it away. That starts with drawing a line— and sending New Democrats to Ottawa to hold it.”NIAGARA AT LARGE Encourages You To Join The Conversation By Sharing Your Views On This Post In The Space Following The Bernie Sanders Quote Below.

A News Commentary by Doug Draper
Posted April 23rd, 2025 on Niagara At Large
At a campaign stop in Hamilton this April 23rd, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre began his remarks with a boast that he has received endorsements from a number of police associations across Ontario including those in Toronto, Durham, Peel, Barrie, and Sault Ste. Marie.
These endorsements, Poilievre suggests, are in no small way due to his pledge to get tougher on crime and to put an end to what he has repeatedly called a ‘lost Liberal decade” of “easy bail and soft-on-crime policies.”
Then Poilievre got right down to some of that tough talk that is sure to please his right-wing base, if not others, on how he will deal with the growing numbers of homeless people across our region and the rest of the country who are huddled down in encampments – Continue reading

Toronto, Ontario – A network of water protection advocates, and environmental and Indigenous-led organizations have released an open letter signed by 85 groups to call on all federal political parties and candidates to commit to defending freshwater in Canada.
The Trump Administration’s threat to freshwater in Canada cannot be underestimated. It has threatened to tear up water agreements to tap shared waters, while simultaneously gutting U.S. departments and initiatives that support transboundary waters, like the Great Lakes. Continue reading

Pope Francis was a strong advocate for action on the climate crisis.
Pope Francis, who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Beuno Aires, Agentina and who had a background in science and the humanities, took his papal name from St. Francis of Assisi, the 12th/13 century Catholic friar who is known by many for his passion for wildlife and the environment, and for embracing a Biblical proverb, paraphrased in more modern times to read; “Where there is no vision, the people parish.” Continue reading

Gateway to historic Rand Estate in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
The Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) has this week issued a final order dismissing the Marotta/Solmar applications for a high density subdivision on the back half of the Rand Estate.
As our supporters will recall, Mr. Marotta’s company Solmar applied for permission to build almost 200 houses on the historic Rand Estate. The subdivision would have been accessed through a narrow panhandle at 200 John St immediately beside the heritage-protected Rand house. Solmar appealed directly to the OLT to approve its proposed subdivision, bypassing the Town. Continue reading

This election comes at a time of crisis. President Trump is disrupting global markets and fundamentally reshaping the international trading system. With Canada, he has been even more direct and aggressive: he wants to break us so America can own us.
Mark Carney won’t let that happen. He has a plan that will fight, protect, and build in the face of these threats to our economy and sovereignty. Mark Carney will build Canada strong.

A Message to Canadians from Federal NDP MP Charlie Angus, representing a Riding in Timmins, Ontario
Posted April 2Oth, 2025 on Niagara At Large

Federal NDP MP Charlie Angus of Timmins, Ontario, in as clear a voice as any, urges us all to keep standing up to Trump and “stay strong.”
This Easter Holiday weekend, I found the following video circulating on the internet of Charlie Angus who is, in my view, one of most most direct speaking, tell-it-like-it-is politicians serving provincially or federally anywhere in Canada.
In the video, Angus delivers a message all of us who have been paying attention have heard before.
Yet it is one that, as long as Trump continues to threaten our sovereignty, our economic welfare and all of the benefits, values and opportunities we hold dear in our Canada. we have to keep hearing and keep telling ourselves and others time and time again to STAY STRONG.
A Footnote from Doug Draper – Let’s all continue to purchase as many Made in Canada products as we can and from any other friendly country, and boycott everything Made in the U.S.A. and let’s join, if we haven’t already, the growing number of Canadians cancelling all travel to Trump’s America until Trump completely stops going to war on us.NIAGARA AT LARGE Encourages You To Join The Conversation By Sharing Your Views On This Post In The Space Following The Bernie Sanders Quote Below.

A Poilievre Government would “scrap the Liberal plastics ban, including the ban on straws, grocery bags, food containers and cutlery, and other single-use plastics.” – Pierre Poilievre, April 18th, 2025
A Commentary by Niagara At Large reporter/publisher Doug Draper followed by a News Release on Plastics by federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre
Posted April 19th, 2025 on Niagara At Large
From Doug Draper – For Pierre Polievre and his kindred spirit, Donald Trump, in the United States, it appears that “freedom” – a word they both like to twist around a lot on whatever planet they choose to live on – is (to paraphrase a lyric from an old song) ‘just another word for bringing back plastic straws.’
To borrow another phrase these soul brothers both commonly use to gift wrap whatever crack-pot idea they want to inflict on the rest of us, what “Common Sense” does that make? Continue reading
